Sears Mower Model Number

I have an old (I'm guessing '90's)Sears Craftsman riding mower on which all the normal places to find a model number have been painted over, rusted, or otherwise obscured. Anyone know how to back into a model number using the mower's physical characteristics? It has a 38" deck and a two-cylinder engine, and the model number probably starts with 917, but on the Sears parts web site there are 35 pages of 917 model numbers. I probably ought to post a photo.
