Do people who do not smoke get cancer? Yes.

Do people who are not in a smoking house get cancer? Yes.

Does the fact that there are some people who smoke and live in a smoking house that don't have cancer mean they never will? No.

Does that mean that smoking does NOT cause cancer? No.

There are many things that cause cancer and smoking is one of them.

There are exceptions to many things. I'll illustrate:

I have four children and like most kids, mine all had chicken pox. My brothers kids also had chicken pox. In fact, they all had them around the same time. Many would say that they all came down because chicken pox is a highly infectious disease and they probably gave it to each other. Also, one of them probably got it at school.

Most would not argue with that.

However - I have NEVER had chicken pox and neither has my brother (for that matter, neither did our mother).

Now, since I am evidently immune to chicken pox, as is my brother and mother, I could argue that chicken pox is really not that contagious, after all, I never got them and I did NOT avoid my kids when they had them.

So, should I tell others that they have nothing to fear from chicken pox because the contagious factor of the pox is exaggerated ... after all ... I never got them.

The fact that I am immune does not change the contagious state of chicken pox any more that the fact that since SOME smokers have not gotten cancer, smoking is safe.

Apples and oranges. Getting chicken pox or a common cold for that matter, is based on antibodies the human body builds up in defense of disease. That's why most people only get it once.

We know that smoking destroys organs, no one gets to smoke for an extended period of time without affecting their system. We know that smoking breaks down tissue and that makes individuals more susceptible to cancer. Because someone who smokes doesn't get cancer doesn't mean it's safe anymore than someone who survives a car crash without seat belts means it's safe to drive without them. The majority of people driving without seat belts will suffer much greater harm than those who wear them.

I wonder if any of the folks who are "immune" to chicken pox ever got shingles?
Not wearing a seatbelt or motorcycle helmet doesn't mean you definitely will get killed if you crash anymore than smoking inevitably leads to early death from repiratory or cardiovascular disease. Genetic variation and diverse other environmental factors create a myriad of different responses to smoking, overeating, etc. The statements about healthy habits, including not smoking and routinely wearing a seatbelt, are probabilistic ones. On average, you are much better off doing safer, rather than riskier things. A lot of folks would shy away from playing Russian roulette, but still smoke, ride their bike without a helmet and don't buckle up. Maybe one in six is too risky, but one in a hundred or one in a thousand isn't....
There's a reason that not everybody who buys a lottery ticket wins. When your number comes up while you're driving, you'd best be prepared!
I have made it a habit to belt up since my first car in '68. I belt up in the tractor, even when just moving it a short way...yes, its a nuisance, but if I don't make it a habit to remember, I will make it a habit to forget.
