Seat button on 4010

I've a black button in the framework beneath the seat on my 4010 that normally gets depressed by the seat and allows the PTO to be used. It also will pull up. I've heard by some that this works the same as depressing it and allows the use of the PTO with no one on the seat. It doesn't work on my 4010.

Do I have a bad button, or is my 4010 not wired to have this button work both ways?

Hi Ralph,
On my 790, one pulls a hinged bracket up (supporting the seat) as well as that switch you are describing.
Then, one sets on the seat and engages the PTO (Range and gear shift will be in neutral).

This is the procedure:
NOTE: Only the rear PTO can be engaged with the operator off the seat. The safety interlock system will shut down the engine and everything will stop, if the mid PTO is engaged with the operator off the seat.
1. Lock park brake.
2. Move gear shift lever (A) and range shift lever (B) into the N (neutral) position.
3. Tip operator's seat forward.
4. Raise/rotate seat support rod (C) from the lowered position to the raised position and hold it there.
5. Lower seat onto support rod.
6. Disable seat switch by pulling switch plunger (D) up.
7. Sit on operator's seat.
8. Start engine.
9. Depress clutch pedal (E) and pull rear PTO lever (F) to the engaged position.
10. Carefully dismount the machine and tip operator's seat up against steering wheel.
11. Move seat support rod to the lowered position.
12. To stop PTO operation, move seat support rod to the raised position and lower seat onto support rod.
13. Sit on operator's seat.
14. Depress clutch pedal (E) and push rear PTO lever (F) to the disengaged position.
15. Carefully dismount the machine.
16. Tip seat up.
17. Move the support rod down to the lowered position.
18. Lower seat to normal operating position.


That's for the off seat PTO usage. I should think that would be in your manual as well, but I must admit, I couldn't find it in the online manual.

My manual clearly says you have to be on the seat to operate the PTO. Of course, it's wrong in a couple other places, too.

I'll look around to see if I have that support rod or whether the bracket around the button rotates up out of the way.

Maybe my dealer will come up with what I'm supposed to be able to do. The guy who delivered the MacKissic obviously knew nothing about it. He did show me a couple other things that I didn't know about though: 1) two little holes on the left side 3 ph bracket to place unused pins in, 2) that you can raise the horizontal shield above the PTO up out of the way to help in attaching the PTO.

Operated the Mac this afternoon with a big rock sitting on the seat.

Had a 4115 that I used a PTO wood chipper on a lot.

Had to fold the operator's seat forward and pull the button up. Had to be in neutral, then I could engage the PTO while off the tractor.

I think the support rod is so you can lower the seat part way--but if it comes down onto the button, the PTO will stop.

Ralph, my 4110 has the same button for operation of the pto. Tractor must be in neutral. If you want to put the seat down after pulling up the button you use the support rod to keep the seat from pressing the button down past the bypass position.

Here's what's in the 4110 manual (and apparently the same on 4115):

Using the Rear Power-Take-Off (PTO) (Operator Off Seat)

NOTE: Only the rear PTO can be engaged with operator off the seat. The
Safety Interlock System will stop the engine and all attachments if the
mid-PTO is engaged.
Prepare to Engage Rear PTO

1. Sit on operator seat.

2. Lock park brake.

3. Gear Models: Move the transmission gear shift lever to the neutral
position.

4. Move the transmission range shift lever to the N (neutral) position.

5. Start the engine.

6. Set engine speed to 1500 rpm or less.

7. Step off machine.

8. Raise operator seat to locate the seat switch stop and two position seat
switch.

9. Raise seat switch (A).

NOTE: With the seat switch stop in the raised position the operator seat
can be lowered without deactivating the seat switch.

10. Raise seat switch stop (B).

11. Lower seat onto seat switch stop.

12. Gear Models: Carefully sit in operator seat.

NOTE: Depress clutch pedal when engaging and disengaging the PTO control
lever.

13. Gear Models: Depress clutch pedal completely.

Attached is a pic from the manual. The 4010 is missing Part B, the rail to hold the seat up from depressing the button.

I'm gonna go to the parts department at the dealership and ask them to look up the part # for the 4010 and 4110, to see if the button is the same part. Bet they're different. Somehow, for whatever convoluted reasoning, they probably make a 4010 button that doesn't work in the "up" position.

I was working at the extension office this morning. Wasn't very busy; so I made use of their fast web system and found this site for the 4000 series: http://www.stonehams.com/pdf/4010_4115trac.pdf

In it, they clearly say that the 4110 and 4115 can be used as stationary power sources, but the 4010 doesn't have the seat button to allow this.

I took a piece of stiff plastic this afternoon and taped it over that silly black button. Works. I'll take it off when I take the MacKissic off.

Still gonna go to the dealership parts department and check the part numbers for the 4010 and 4110 for that button.

The seat switches are different:

4010 --> M800051
4110 --> M803327

If I get this new switch and it works (depends on price whether I get it; that piece of plastic and masking tape works), I'm writing to JD and asking them why.

I had a little trouble with the need for a support bar. Maybe they didn't want to include it with the lower cost 4010. Why is it even needed for 4110 and 4115? It's needed for 4110 and 4115 owners who have the stick shift and then need to get up onto the seat to work the clutch to engage the PTO. However, Stonehams site (despite what the JD main site says) says 4010s only come in HST. Therefore, they don't need the support bar. Just raise the seat and leave it raised. Pull the seat button up and then pull up the PTO button. I can do that on my 4010, but the button doesn't work in the "up" position. Weird. Can't figure their reasoning. Think it'd be cheaper to not have to stock a separate seat button for the 4010.

I went back and input the part # (M803327). It was listed for only $27.18. So, I clicked on Order Part. Then things got confusing. Will the dealer notify me? It didn't take me to a place to input a credit card or anything.
