seat time for hunting rights

This one is for all you folks who like to hunt and/or cut firewood. Here in Little Rhody it is getting very hard to find private property to gain access to for hunting. but I just scored 200 acres! How? I traded seat time for sole trespass rights. I offered to help the landowners with their forestry plan, which is for tax purposes, by using my little 20+ year old Kubota B7100 16 hp tractor, no loader, to cut in some trails and make two very small clearcuts. At first I wasn't sure my little tractor was up to skidding out trees, but today it worked great! I was taking out trees up to 20" in diameter and anywhere from 12' to full length long, depending on the diameter. It is slow going because I have to drag them some distance, but I enjoy the seat time. In return, I get to keep all of the wood, and I gain sole access for deer/turkey hunting. This might be something for other hunters to keep in mind. In the future I will maintain the trails with my brushhog. It enables me to not only maintain a positive relationship with the landowner, but also to project a positive image of hunters to the general public.

Great job, you have proven that not all hunters are terrible people who think all ground is for them.

Your only problem is going to be keeping the above mentioned types off your rights,s ince you are doing such a great job of clearing it out for them.

I think the seat time would be great enough, not being a hunter any longer, but realizing this is one of the best ways to maintain nature at it's best. I have noticed this year more turkeys than ever before, out in the open. I travel the state of KY most of the time and never noticed as many as I do now.

I fall into this category. I lost my hunting rights to the all mighty dollar last year. I contributed a turkey and ham to the farmer but money got involved and I didn't have enough Jeffersons to play. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I am working an angle with someone else to possibly trade wood work for hunting access. I don't even want it for exclusive rights just access. I believe if we work together everyone can hunt on whats left.

Score one for the Good guys!! I too have an arrangement similar to yours. The farmer who owns the land behind me(approx. 30 acres), had given me permission to cut firewood, hunt and pretty much use it as my own. He deer hunts and I don't, so my only real concession has been to avoid the timber during deer season ( common courtesy anyway). As the tillable land has all been put in CRP, I try to mow deer trails that hub into his stand location and while I'm mowing I keep a 400+ yard range open for myself!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
