The Jeep Comanche is one of the best small pickups to come out of that era. The 4.0L Straight 6 will usually do 250K before a rebuild. They share all front end parts with a Cherokee of the same era years so getting parts is easy. The front end was unibody(really uniframe) and the bed was mounted on a regular frame grafted in to the unibody. The long wheelbase model could even be had in a Big Ton or Metric Tonne package which let you haul quite a bit of weight for a truck that size.
I know of quite a few guys investigating diesel swaps once the CRD Liberty starts to show up in salvage yards. The Renault TD offered in 84-87 was really a bit underpowered and RARE.
