Secrets to car buying anyone?

I currently have 2 :)

The Jeep Comanche is one of the best small pickups to come out of that era. The 4.0L Straight 6 will usually do 250K before a rebuild. They share all front end parts with a Cherokee of the same era years so getting parts is easy. The front end was unibody(really uniframe) and the bed was mounted on a regular frame grafted in to the unibody. The long wheelbase model could even be had in a Big Ton or Metric Tonne package which let you haul quite a bit of weight for a truck that size.

I know of quite a few guys investigating diesel swaps once the CRD Liberty starts to show up in salvage yards. The Renault TD offered in 84-87 was really a bit underpowered and RARE.

I agree with everyone else. Do your Homework !
I have purchased my last 2 vehicles via the internet. But even before I wne t online, I did research. Consumer reports, Edmunds, KBB etc. You can even look at colors and options on the web to get a pretty good idea of what your "final" vehicle will look like. Try to deal with the "Internet" dept. of the dealership or the fleet manager. I've gotten the best prices from those two. The internet department knows that "you" know how to use the interenet and will usually choke up a decent price. If not, keep looking.
Invoice price may be a starting point, but as many have said, they dealers get a hold-back, rebates, and factory incentives.
Beside buying "NEW" vehicles, I have also bought a couple of "used" cars. Got a great price on them on the internet as well. But on the used cars, I would only buy them "IF" they still had some factory warranty remaining. Even if only 6 months or so. It just gives me the security blanket I needed to buy a used car. But man.... you can REALLY save on a used one if you shop, shop, shop.
Good Luck, Tim

Okay, it's been said, but it's kind of like the Three Rules for buying real estate: Location, Location, Location!

Only here it's Knowledge Knowledge Knowledge!

Specifically:

<ul type="square"> [*]Know what you want. [*]Know what you want to pay. [*]Know the market. [/list]

Then, if you are financing it, line up your financing beforehand with a good rate at a local bank or credit union.

But don't talk about that to the dealer. Only talk to him about PRICE. Let him finance it. Be stupid on this point. Be an absolute sucker on the subject! Let him fleece you on the financing - he gets a percentage so he'll be less hard on the price. Stick to your guns, be tough, and dicker on the price. Let him laugh at this poor schmuck who thinks he's putting it over on the dealer by talking him down on the price, while said dealer is shafting him on the financing.

When you have your price, sign the papers, and drive away while they laugh at you behind your back.

Then go get that nice financing you already arranged, and pay off the shyster loan the dealer arranged before the first payment is due.

Oh, and shop near the end of a holiday weekend, if you can.
