New member to this forum. Can use some help. Can a Brillion seeder/cultipacker model GLP-642 be used for various seeds required for deer food plots. I just bought a used unit and when I down loaded the operators manual it noted this unit was for grass seed. Since I plan to use such seeds as clover, rye, turnip, oats, brassica, some smaller some larger than grass seed, can a mixture of these seeds be used? Are there any types of seed you recommend? Are there any seeds to be avoided with this unit? Thanks, Bob

I've used one, but only for a short while. What I learned was mostly anecdotal information from the owner, who had just a little more experience than I did.

According to what he told me, the seed metering was fairly accurate with common cool season grasses and many common forage grass seeds. Anything larger was HIGHLY innacurate, if it worked at all. Larger seed tended to "bridge", which is in essence, clogging of the seed openings. Smaller seed tended to settle through any larger seed it was mixed with and end up on the ground at a much faster rate than what it was mixed with. Seed metering was inaccurate and inconsistent at best when throttled down to suit small seed.

It's a grass seeder.....Anything EXCEPT grass seed is a compromise at best. However, it IS one of the best grass seeders on the market.

Do NOT attempt to seed alfalfa with it.

I'm quite sure it won't sow oats--you need to do that by hand or use a grain drill.

Good info... been lookin' here and there for a handful of years on a seeder, too. Couple of Brillion's on CL and Alaska List.

Nice 10ft. er with double boxes for $6,000! Couple of 5's for $500 and $750.

We have a 10' Brillion cultipacker seeder, with the large and small seed boxes. We use it for seeding pasture land and hay ground, but that is about it. For those type of jobs it's performance and accuracy is unparallelled IMO, wonderful germination rates. For the type of work you are describing, you will probably be better off with a standard cyclone type spreader for the larger seeds, and the Brillion will work for the smaller seeds if you have the second, small seed metering box. With that setup it will work on very small legume seeds. Over the years we have planted many acres (close to 900ac on the meter) with various types of clover, alfalfa, etc with good success. If you only have the standard seed box, it might work if you mix all the seed together really well, but it probably won't be very even. Regardless though, it's the cultipacker aspect of it that is what really makes these work so well. If you can't get the larger seeds to feed well, spread them first with another type of seeder/spreader, then go over it with the Brillion dropping the small seeds and incorporating them.
