Seeding two acres of Centipede

Don't put rye on centipede. Something about nutrients or some such. Me, I still prefer centipede for my area of Georgia and southward. In florida, it's St. Augustine grass. Bahia, keep ye mower blades sharp, and mower working good.

How well does Bermuda handle drought? We tend to go thru spells of 5 to 6 weeks with no rain. I don't want to water two acres. I agree it is a more attractive deeper green..just not sure on it. I think that's what they had before. I got a couple areas of centipede.

I never water my grass and it stays green all summer long. I have red clay and it's shocking how much moisture is in the soil just a few inches down during the heat of summer without rain for a couple of months. Bermuda slows down when it's not watered, but it stays green.

I have some clay areas as well. Any you are correct down 6" or so its tacky with moisture even when its dry. It just the outer layer of crust that gets hard. Well now you have given me something to think on. How mush faster is it to get established than Centipede?

Bermuda grass grows fastest in the middle of summer. So, if you plant early (April) it will take longer to establish than if you plant in June. However, don't be afraid to plant in April, because you need as much time as possible for it to grow and start spreading stolons and rhizomes before winter. Planting too late will allow the bermuda seed to germinate, but risk being killed by freeze in the winter if rhizomes (underground stems) have not developed enough.

I would say that bermuda will establish 2-3 times faster than centipede. Or, it will establish in 1/2 the time it would take for centipede. But that's just a guess.
