Self Driving Car

Most of the vehicles I see must be driving themselves , the driver is always looking down ?

CBC the most left wing media going........guaranteed to skew statistics to make a headline. The skew on these without accounting for the obvious "other factors" is mind blowing. (they transferred southern climate and population density factors and applied them across Canada ) must of been short on news !

Why would anyone want their car to drive itself. Driving a car is the only transportation mode you have control over, why give that up? I love to drive and I don't plan on putting my life on a bunch of sensors, especially in the northeast when the sensors are covered in ice and salt. No thank you I will drive myself.

It's not an all or nothing choice. Having a car self-driving capable, in conjunction with the needed highway technology, does not mean you never drive your car yourself. There are times and distances when I would like to be relieved of the mind numbing "enjoyment" of driving. That doesn't mean I can't drive to the store in the usual way. Your control of your transportation is ephemeral when you are sitting in a traffic jam 20 miles long. That jam is often caused by human error or poor driving.

With a self-driving car you could enter an automated lane similar to passing through a high-speed tolling lane on the NY Thruway--if they ever get that. Once underway in that lane the car is on auto pilot. A stream of networked vehicles could move at whatever pace is safe which could be 80 mph in many places. You could watch a movie, surf the 'net, take a nap, truly enjoy gawking at the scenery, yak with the people in nearby autos. All while traveling faster than you normally could on that portion of your trip.

as far as sitting back and letting the vehicle take you somewhere ... its here already ... public transit ....
Somewhere. Exactly. Public transit NEVER goes where I want to go, nor does it go where I come from. And I'm in a major metropolis.

I don't think autonomous cars can be compared in any way to public transit... but they can be compared to taxis. Only they will (presumably) speak English.

I was driving behind a Mercedes this week. The guy was driving slower than the speed limit which was kinda odd. We were behind him for 5-10 minutes and it was not possible to pass until we got we both merged onto another road and the traffic allowed me to put put past in the fast lane. Kinda bad, when I had to pass someone in my F350. As I passed the guy I swear he was reading a magazine. Now I have seen people reading books, doing their hair, shaving, and even eating a bowl of cereal with milk so what he was doing was not THAT big of a surprise except we were in a bit heavier traffic and this guy was merging onto a major road at rush hour. But I have seen this before though...

It did occur to me that this guy was in a new Mercedes and I have looked at the Mercedes SUV and they have some very impressive technology that signals when one is going out of your lane or one is about to hit a car in front. Other brands have this as well but Mercedes seem to be pushing the technology. I really suspect this guy was using that technology, and maybe cruise control, to drive his car while he was reading. If he was doing so, it was working. I did not see his car swerve at all when I was behind him, he was just driving too much under the speed limit.

Later,
Dan
