If you get the BCS be sure and get the quick connect hubs. I can change implements in about 1 minute.

Those quick connects also work on the Grillo and are worth the money for sure

Help me out please. You can buy a small used Yanmar in great shape for the same price. Why would you go the two wheeled route when you can have four pullin? Don't get me wrong, I'm intrigued by these machines and often search CL for them but I can't help to think that they are a novelty. After all a Yanmar has an automatic ballast box.....my big butt.

You really have to use one. I have a full size tractor as well as a 722 BCS. The design is beyond compare, just so well thought out.

Despite having that Farmall A and DX55, that walk behind rototiller was/is a valuble tool for my operation. 75%+ of my tomatoes grown are of trellised indeterminates, after a certain point I can not cultivate with the A. Mowing with DX55 in the raspberries is not very efficent due to the size of tractor & flail mower and the length of rows. The Grillo/BCS would fit these applications much better than the existing Machines. Now cultivating the determinate tomatoes, the ornamental grasses, the corn and bean crops the A will more productive, just as the Grillo/BCS can not hope to perform the amount of tillage the DX55 does. For my operation, having all three is the way to go.

Now comes the truly crappy part. This is a lot of money I am looking to spend, and before I spend large amounts like this, I really prefer being able to run the machines in person to see if they truly do what I want them to do. I have no problem spending the extra money the BCS if it fits me better than the Grillo. Unfortunately, I don't appear to have a Grillo dealer near by, and the BCS dealers don't have any on display or for Demo. Any suggestions on this end?

As far as mowing through garden to chop up garden waste, the 85d is fine. You want a slow speed to get it as fine as possible. If you had an 853 or 107d, you'd still use 1st or second gear for this. Where you would find second gear slow is in larger areas that you're looking to just knock down either for hay or just to shorten it. The flail mower would not be ideal for haying, but is great for making paths through a brushy woods or a field. Just remove the back baffle, put 'er in third gear, and GO!

The 85d will also fill the bill for your tilling requirements.

I'm not familiar with bareroot grass harvesting. Are your root clumps in rows or just spread about? The root digger would only be good for lifting the clumps to ease harvest. You'd still need to pick them up and knock the dirt out of the roots.

Hey Roy,

As you know, Joel is VERY frugal. He didn't even have dealership labels to stick on the tractors until a couple years ago. You're gonna need to corner the market on Grillo bumper stickers...

A bareroot ornamental grass clump typically is between 8" to 24" in diameter depending on the variety and age of the plant. I plant the grasses in 48" rows and then dig the roots up for propagation as very few of the varieties produce a viable seed. I sell them in #1 & #2 Grade divisons, whole clumps, as well as 2,3,5 & 7 gal finished pots.

Call Earthtools and see if anyone in you area has one that might let you try it ??? I don't have the area you have I am working growing as much of my food as I can on a half acre. Also gardening is one of the things that helps my stress issues, which at times can get bad . I needed a machine that would work when I need dirt time . So I studied a long time and settle on the grillo I have used rental bcs tillers and knew the were good . Everything I have read lead me to believe that the machines were equal in quality and do to the lack of name reconition in the U.S. I could get more machine for my money in a grillo . Besides Green is my favorite color:D
Best I can do till you can put your hands on a machine :cultivating winter squash to loosen up the soil from alot of rain this spring doesn't seem to have rained since them:mad:

Hey dadof3,

You're not comparing apples to apples. Pricewise, you're comparing a used four wheel tractor to a new two wheel tractor.

Two wheel tractors are more maneuverable. You can get them through 36 inch gates. You can turn them easier in tight backyards. You can get closer to small plants and do a more accurate job of weeding, mowing, etc.

Two wheel tractors are safer on slopes. You can go on steeper ground with a lower risk of rollover. If it does rollover, you're behind it, not on it.

Two wheel tractors take up less storage space. They can be moved around in storage without starting easier than a four wheel tractor.

Two wheel tractors are more fuel efficient. Since the machine is not lugging you around, it doesn't need as big an engine. all its power is focused on the working implement with minimal power directed at propulsion. It is also easier to get it unstuck if you happen to stick it.

Two wheel tractors give you the best exercise a human could ask for - walking. Running a two wheel tractor will help your "ballast box" get smaller...

4 wheel tractor would be useless to me even a garden tractor was not effective . With the garden fruit trees grape arbors A riding lawnmower compacted areas you had to go around to mow the open areas in the yard . and Having to make several small vegteble patch instead a one large area makes a two wheeler much more handy.

On another note A while back I lived in a little town north of here they hired a tin horn city administator who decided to clean up the village his prefered victim was a little old man or lady living on ssi that was having problems keeping their yards up . Be it from health reasons or their mowers died and living on a fixed income couldn't afford a new mower . I had a friend who worked for the city who thought this was wrong and kept me informed . The village would send workers down tear down fence if the had to bush hog the yard and bill them $75 an hour . I walked a gravely 2 wheeler with a bush hog deck through the gate mowed the heavy stuff my friend went over it with a lawnboy. them went down to his office called him a cowardly south end of a north bound donkey (He only messed with the elderly) informed him he wouldn't get to charge one of our seniors then file a complait with every one I could he lasted about 3 months That alone made every dime I have spent on two wheelers worth it:D

Bravo, bravo I am glad you called hm for what he was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is an old saying that proves itself every day,
Wise men use power to benefit others-meaning the weak and those
unable to defend themselves financially or physically, Cowards and egotists wield power over others.
Adolf ****** and Benito Mussolini, Pol Pot and Ferdinand Marcos and these wonderfull bankers of late
are but a few perfect examples.

Great answers all. I think I'm intrigued by them because my dad had an old Gravely walk behind when I was a kid. That thing was a brute. I'll keep scanning CL.
