Hello,

This is not a "for sale" post but rather a question. I have a 2005 4720 with FEL that I purchased new last year. It has 198 hrs and is in great shape. When I purchased it I was looking at doing contract work such as shredding, construction cleanup, leveling, etc. I did some work with the tractor, and then my career changed. I now have no time to do tractor work. I talked with my dealer and he said he could sell the tractor for me no problem. I took it to his lot 3 months ago and have not even had an offer. We have it priced 5k less than a new one ( mine still has 2 yrs warranty left and has a canopy added).

What can I realistically expect to get for this tractor? Is there a good place to sell it? I hate to take too much of a loss, but the payments are killing me as they are on something I am not even using and it is just deprciating. I have a 70's model JD for use around the house and have no need for this tractor anymore.

That's the major problem with brands other than the big 3. Resale. Current owner's and dealers will swear I'm full of bean soup, but I have been to many tractor auctions and "brand x" (Zetor, Kioti, Mahindra, Branson, etc.) just don't sell well. Here is an example: Zetor 75 HP (don't know the model), 2.5 years old, cab and air, front end loader, 700 hrs, looked new - sold at auction for $8200 2 months ago (in NE Texas).
I couldn't stand that kind of loss. Good luck in your sale. Let the flames begin.....

I think you will find it depends on the dealer or salesman how fast a consigned tractor sells, most of the time the dealer is making more money on his own machine. Plus financing is always better on new. We just took a used Branson in on trade with 235 hours and sold it in a week, but the customer was paying cash.

No flames. You only spoke of what you have seen. I've seen the exact same thing. Now we'll both get flamed. ;) It seems that 99.99999% of the people who object to what you said say that they keep a tractor for 40 years, or more, and resale won't be an issue. Heck, I'll admit that I like keeping a reasonably new tractor around. I am so limited on my time that I have zero tolerance for something to not work exactly as it is supposed to when I go to use it. That is besides the fact that when a new innovation comes along that improves productivity, safety, or comfort, I'm interested.

Although there will be many to follow with flames, it's simply a pure fact (whether justified or not) that off brand tractors are harder to move; especially when used.

Now, I do truthfully want to wish the original poster the best of luck. Hopefully one of the guys here who swears that off brand tractors keep the same resale as name brand tractors do will step up and buy his tractor. Then everyone would be happy. :)

I wish I had your used 4720 here on my lot. I get asked daily for a used Branson or Mahindra. Seldom do they last more than a week. If you can find a way to ship it here cheaply, I'll get it sold for you.

On the used price, it has to be enough cheaper to accomodate for the lack of 0% financing and the year or so less warranty, plus some discount for the 200 hours. But that is the case with any brand. Figure 0% for 36 months vs 9.95% for 36 months. That is $2500 right there for the interest difference. What is a years warranty worth? $500 maybe. 200 hours, perhaps $10/hour for another $2000. Add that up and if the tractor is $5000 less it is a good deal for a cash buyer, but marginal for someone that has to finance. Even so, I think your price is fine.

The big factor is the salesman. If he is making less on the consignment, he will sell his unit first.

I think Dave is exactly right: The big factor is the salesman. If he is making less on the consignment, he will sell his unit first.

A good salesman can steer a customer to whatever the salesman wants that person to buy. Obviously within some limits, but the skill of a salesman should not be underestimated.

Since it has been there for 3 months with no takers, you need to change something.

I would go to the dealer and ask him if I could offer a bonus to whoever sold your tractor. The consignment deal stays the same, but you will pay whoever sells it an additional $500, or even $1000, depending on what your finances are and the payments you are wasting.

I bet the tractor will be gone in a week...

I have to agree with some of the others. I get asked EVERY DAY if I have any used tractors to sell. As a Branson and Mahindra Dealer, I don't see many used tractors. Many of my buyers are first timers, and don't have a tractor to trade in. The last used tractor I had on my lot was a 1939 Ford 9N, and it sold after about six weeks, in need of repairs. So, it may be the dealer that you are working with that is the problem.

Just my $.02...

I bought my Branson last summer. Looked all over for a used one but could not find one. Lots of John Deere and Kubota's though. :)

Thanks for the replies and encouragement. The dealer is pretty much a one man operation, but last time he told me he had sold around 70 tractors so I think he does pretty good business. I kinda figured that he had more incentive to sell a new one than mine but I was hoping he could have got it sold by now.

You could post it for sale in the classified on here. Also, might try ironplanet web site, or craigslist, and the local freebee paper that has a good reputation for classifieds. But, the dealer is your real problem. I'm sure there are many buyers who would love to get a nearly new tractor and save $5Gs.
