Well, just "'cause we've always done this way" is no justification to continue if it is wrong.

The pigs escaped reaction, I believe, because it was done and no amount of advice, suggestion etc. could undo that one.

Being adults in training is not a walk in the park and kids sure have lots of stuff to deal with these days. Because they are good kids (and there are lots and lots of good ones out there) they will likely see it for what it is when given an opportunity to remove themselves from the group mentality that often drives these kind of activities.

Bet a lot of theTBNr's would love to see some "Chicken on a Leash" photos /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am laughing just thinking about it.

like that idea also, chickens on a leash! they could all make up little signs for around the chickens neck and put the name of their favorite teacher. saying thank you for teaching me!!!! course the biggest baddest rooster should have the principals name on it. then let them skip school and the parents taketm to a park for a day of fun and food. no one gets hurt, no dammage, and parental guidence

Well Cindi, since you ask, and since the frame of reference I have is my local districts, Pigs in the admin Building seem perfectly appropriate. There was just one appointed here to a job of Director of Personnel at the annual pay of $165,000 a year.

Adults in training, yup, I just watched an adult in training attach a strap to an antique corn sheller that was in mint condition, and hook the other end to a tractor, and drag the machine out of a shed he had been told not to by 2 adults a couple hours before. His "adult mother" stood there and told a real adult, one of those who had told the little pi$$pot to leave the machine alone, "so what, he had fun. If that woman is an adult, we don't need any more like her.

First I would like to say That I wish I had thought a little bit more before posting , ..it is to easy to step up on the soap box and give an opinion thet something is not right , ,, it is much harder to come up with a solution with at least some thought first ,,,
So here s a possible solution , .... the idea of the tags with all the teachers and others name is a good one ,,,, How about building a cage/pen in the gym , have the chickens all tagged , proved food and water , and a means so any "mess" is contained ? Maybe even take it one step and dress the chickens up with hats and etc , (make sure it will not injure them , (over heat etc..) or tother chickens)..
Maybe model pen/ cage to look like the school .....
Good luck , sounds like you could trun this in to harmless fun with a bit of thinking ,,,

I deal with this clinically on a weekly basis. Adults in training means acting like adults as much as possible. Providing the means to a destructive end ultimately is damaging to the teens involved, and, of course to the building. There is all kinds of non-destructive "fun" to be enjoyed. Limits and boundaries are often sacrificed at the altar of a desire for acceptance - even from our children. "NO" is an incredibly loving word that is too often omitted from current parental vocabularies. Sorry, I see the damage of this kind of approach all too often. Relative ethics just doesn't seem to work, unless one subscribes to hashing over exactly what "the meaning of 'is' is...

I have come to this forum off and on over the past few months and have come to know some of you who post here failry well. I have thought about this subject and tried to come up with a diplomatic way of saying what I really think.

The one useful piece of information that I got out of this entire thread was that the chicken dung could damage the floor. I have to admit that I had not thought of that.

I tried to stress upon you (collectively) that the school permits these activities. I beleive the faculty gets as big a kick out of it as the kids do, providing no serious damage is done and no one gets physically hurt, and no single individual is focused on.

Now I offer the definition of a prank:

Main Entry: [1]prank
Pronunciation: 'pra[ng]k
Function: noun
Etymology: obsolete: prank: to play tricks
Date: circa 1529
TRICK: : a mildly mischievous act : a ludicrous act

In keeping with the spirit of the intention of this tradition, it would serve no purpose to take away the prankish aspect of the event. This is an act by a group of kids that are saying goodbye to homework, goodbye to books, goodbye to teachers dirty looks.

I for one, see nothing wrong with it, I am also honored that my daughter chose to include me, for whatever reason. It gave me the opportunity to ask and learn that the idea being bandied about may cause damage and incur liability.

I may be strange and I may be irresponsible, but I find the idea of hogs in the admin building hilarious. Based on the reactions of the faculty and the write up I saw in the yearbook, I was not alone. Perhaps this is one of those 'have to be there' things.

I respect all the views stated in this thread, but feel that many of you have formed an opinion on this matter that may be just a little bit ......prohibitive, to put it midly. While the suggestions of 'parental irresponsibility' were veiled, however thinly, they were there nonetheless.

I feel increasingly compelled to defend myself. If you will re-read my original post you will see that I came here for opinions and suggestions, not judgements. So why do I feel judged? Am I just being sensitive? Or are there some replies that seriously question my parenting abilites?

If I am over-reacting or mis-reading betwen the lines, then please accept my apologies. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

C wave.....how on earth could you possibly find any similarity in the story you referred me to, and what I have posted here? I rest my case.

You weren't "mis-reading." Try to take a step back from the "fun" and think of the far-reaching implications for all concerned. What is the ultimate message? Does bidding farewell to secondary education mean saying goodbye to thoughtfulness or responsibility, in addition to teachers' dirty looks? Graduation is a wonderful milestone for seniors, but only a beginning; not an end. I wonder actually how many educators in your school really approve of "traditions" such as this that perhaps reflect a lack of respect for the alma mater as much as a desire to have a good time? The referenced news article was entirely appropriate, given that in that particular case things quickly got out of hand -- indications are that parents "helped" the students in behavior that led to abuse and criminal activity. Don't know about your state, but here, funds are very, very tight. What a legacy to cost the district money, potentially a lot of money, at a time when salaries/raises are limited, activities are being cut, books are expensive, etc. What is the message to the community when the "good" kids who perform well academically, hold down jobs in the community, and ostensibly are the achievers in their class respond to their school and community with similar behaviors? It isn't prudish to maintain a bit of reverence or seriousness for important milestones. Just a few thoughts...

Hiya Cindi. I'm sure sorry you're getting pecked on right now (pun intended) for asking for input about holding the Chicken Prank. I think after the Hog Prank of last year, the Chicken one would have been a logical topper, but my hubby says that chicken poop would probably mar the finish on the gym floor like it does to car paint and is next to impossible to clean or buff out. I don't know, as the only chicken I ever kept as a pet stayed outdoors, but he raised about 10,000 of them as a kid so he knows more about chicken poop than I do.

I guess you couldn't throw in a couple of live alligators in either......lol.......but what about some fake critters? Don't they have those lifesized horses, cows, etc, that you could rent out from somewhere and deposit all over the gym?

My wedding shower held in a school district office included a goat, a ferret and other assorted critters and they pooped and peeped their way through the entire party. It stank for many days afterwards, but we did have a fun party.

p.s. I always enjoy reading your posts. They are very well written and my husband (LeoFrisk) is right that you should consider writing articles for magazines like Readers Digest.
