Sensor

Guys on the left side of my YM 226 below the oil filter there is what appears to be some sort of sensor. It is round and comes to a point (facing toward the radiator). The pointed end has a brass appearance. What is this for and is the brass pointed end supposed to be exposed?

It's the oil pressure sending unit. The brass is supposed to be exposed.
