I have a 1026r on order. My question is about an extended service contract. Is it a waste of money or a prudent move?

Alawyas have my ears open to others who know more than me.

Thanks for your time.

I don't want to tell anyone it is a "waste of money" but I never even considered purchasing one, and I am on the eighteenth garden tractor.

I cant say its a waste of money either, things fail, and you never know when/if it will fail. I had a new 2003 2210 for 3 years, a new 2006 2520 for 3 years, then my new left over 2008 (bought in April 09) 2520 and none of them ever been back to the dealership.

I don't buy service contracts or extended warranties. Period. Service contracts and extended warranties are designed to make the dealer money. Their main objective is not to protect the buyer.

IF, I were to consider it, I would have to know:

What does it cover?

What does it NOT cover?

On the average, how much would it cost me to pay for the maintenance/repairs out of my pocket?

One of my cousins purchased a service contract (not extended warranty) on her new vehicle a couple of years ago. One of the covered items was tires. When the tires wore out, they would be replaced "free." Problem was, the dealer determined when the tires were "worn out," not the buyer. My cousin is a widow that frequently travels alone. She did not need to be driving on nearly bald tires, but the dealer wasn't required to change them until they were worn to some minute fraction of tread left. She learned her lesson.
BTW, a new set of tires and a few oil changes would have cost far less than half of what she paid for the service contract.

Corporate Deere reps have been pushing service contracts for some time now to their dealers. IF you already intend to take the unit to the dealer or have them come to you for service (service does not mean repair). Then find out what it will consist of, when? Where? What? There should not be anything that states replacement when worn, that is an indicator that it is a hose job. But it can save money, you are essentially paying for oil change, filters, or whatever ahead of time before price increases on the parts, labor rate increases, etc. For folks that have the time/ability to do these things themselves then probably does not pay. Everyone should have an idea of what their own time is worth and no matter what it is never free. Good luck.
