setting trusses with only 2?

If I understand right, you have a 2x4 truss top rail that you are following from bottom to top along the roof line. You could nail onto that 2x4 if it were 6" deep instead of 4".

So, I would go to the scrap pile, grab all those short little 2x4 & x6" pieces, and make a bunch 7" long. Nail/screw these onto the inside of your top truss board, 1/2 of the stubs hanging down. Cut 2x4s to fit inside your truss, and nail/screw them onto these little stub boards. This basiclly doubles up the top truss board, giving you a surface to screw your metal onto.

Perhaps I misunderstand, or there are other things in the way preventing this. But I think that would work - I realize you will have to fit & paste a bit around the webbing of the trusses.

You would be using the equivelant of 8 2x4 studs or about $16 of new wood for these sistered nailers if you don't have enough longer scraps laying around.

good idea! But will it hurt the top chord putting nails all in it and stuff?

I'm no engineer, but I assume the other plan would be to nail the covering to the top chord anyhow, so these nails or screws instead should come out about the same? The added wood will help add support to the top chord anyhow..... That should be a good thing, tho sometimes pre-engineered stuff don't like to be beefed up.

Anyhow, should be fine.

I like a bit of overhang on the roofline myself, glad you are going for it.
