Don't go overboard on this...
As long as you've got a couple hundred yards open field, you'll be OK.
It''d be nice if you had a hill as a backstop though.

I'm right handed, but left eye dominant and shoot lefty. It's somewhat of a curse when you want rifles that are unique calibers. I'm building a rifle from scratch right now, because I can't find a commercial offering of my liking for that caliber.

When it comes to shotguns, buy an over-under or a Browning BPS pump. The BPS is bottom load and bottom eject, it's truly ambidextrous (in fact, the bolt release seems to work better for lefty's).

My preference for an all-around field shotgun is still a 12 ga.-28" barrelled Browning BPS. Buy one with the camo finish and you'll have every base covered for any shotgunning you want to do (clays, dove, waterfowl, pheasant or swap to a rifled barrel for deer slugs). Check them out at gunbroker.com to get an idea of pricing.

I am also right handed, but left eye dominant and shoot lefty. I also have a Browning BPS pump 12 gauge. I am very comfortable with this shotgun. I have had no problems matching the "hot shots" with clays. "She Who Must Be Obeyed" shut down my shooting range :(. Jay

Why'd she do that, Jay?

Mornin Chris,
A short story for yea ! Years ago I was a skeet fanatic ;) had to shoot three times a week ! I would shoot tuesday and thursday afternoons/evenings and saturday I would treat myself to go down and shoot at the remington gun club in Stratford,Ct out over the water ! Boy did those orange birds stand out over the ocean and blue sky ! One day they decided they were closing down the club because of the lead contamination :( that was indeed a sad day for all the skeet fanatics in the area !

BTW my claim to fame was a 1st place at the Lordship Open, cant remember the year but I shot 96 of 100 with my little 410 class C. Of course that immediately moved me to class A where I had no chance at all of being competitive ! ;) :)

lead in water is really bad.
that's typically what shuts down ranges. Shooting into dirt is generally considered ok (albeit with lots of rules), but if it can get into water, that's a real bad thing.

BTW, there's also the NRA range book, it's about $60 and it has layouts and everything.

can you tell I looked into buying a range?

The first BPS I bought is a wood stocked 3" chambered 12 ga. I spent many hours polishing the action and it is probably one of the smoothest pumps I've ever handled. I love that shotgun and it fits me like a glove. I used to shoot skeet frequently and I'd love it when I'd be shooting with some folks that had high-end O/U's and a "better than" mentality. The look on their face when I'd bust a straight 25 with a lowly pump was priceless:)

I later added a 3.5"-12ga. synthetic stock and can't seem to get the action polished just right. The other day I stumbled across a non-catalogued BPS high-cap that would make a great home defense gun. I'm debating buying the high-cap or a 3.5"-12 ga. camo finish with a 24" barrel for turkey. The turkey gun would also work well for home defense. decisions....decisions....
