The dealer quoted me $800 in parts (rebuild kit) and $2000 in labor.........OUCH!

What is in the rebuild kit, that sounds like less than I would expect.

I think you have typical indication that your tractor has cylinder liner cavatation from previous owners not changing coolant often enough.I'd recommend pulling engine pan then pressurize radiator and look for antifreeze droplets exiting cyl liners. PS antifreeze is very detrimental to rod & main brgs on crankshaft.

You might think it is a lot (not that it isn't), but it gets you basically a new tractor. Then change your coolant every few years, it needs to protect against corrosion as much as against freezing and overheating.

This type of rebuild does not have to be done at the dealers. I have a friend that does semi repair and worked at the local heavy truck place for a number of years. He is expanding due to his good reputation and building a new larger shop. Drove buy his place and it was packed. Two John Deere Tractors,back hoe ,air compressor, 5 semis,6 dump trucks,motor home,and 2 Dodge dually pickups. This stuff does not stay there, he really turns it over. What I am saying is that other people are capable of doing the work. The last tractor a friend had rebuilt was a 1650 Oliver. Turned into a money pit with crankshaft and head trouble. Wish you well as the tractor presents it self as good looking.
