I am looking at Cadet mowers. Is the extra cost of the shaft drive worth the extra money? Why do the engines have less power? Anybody have answers?

With a drive shaft there are no V belts that take more power to run and wear out.
Some TBN members claim they get just as good service from a MTD with belts.
My 2 cents is that I would spend the extra money for the drive shaft.

Drive shafts require less horsepower a smaller engine can be used to run tractor.

Shaft all the way...got a 34 year Cub 125 original shaft and tranny never re-built....you wont get that longevity with belts...
I'm a Cub fan all the way, but other mfg offer Shaft drive
so this isnt a biased response. Get the shaft option regardless of Mfg.
A real sweet option on Cub's 3000 series is a shaft coupler drive system for attachments. This eliminates the older carriages, pulleys & belt systems of older models or 2000 series setups....The higher end Deeres & Kubotas garden tractors offer similiar setups...

We tried lots of different brands before we bought our Cub Cadet.
I've got a 10 year old Cub garden tractor and bought it because our hills are SO steep that it was the ONLY brand of tractor that could mow UP our hills without one of the following happening:
A) Engine died.
B) Deck disengaged to divert power to drive belts.
C) Both the deck disengaged AND the engine died.
D) Drive belts slipped so the tractor would go up the hill.
The Cub is the most reliable, best built, most abused and ridden hard piece of equipment I've ever bought and it never fails me.
