Came up with this quick fix. Also allows you to grab it just a bit easier.

Yay or Nay?

Nay,, I was there the day an oxygen bottle was dropped 12 feet, the bottle was being lifted by the holes in the cap.

It turns out,, the threads in the cap, and on the tank, rust away quickly when exposed to weather,,
The cap just came off the tank,,

That bottle that dropped? I reached out, and grabbed it by the valve,,
the tank bounced two more times,,, IIRC,, that was before 1970 at a technical school in Pittsburgh,,

I have never seen a cap compromised by rust. That would totally negate the value of the cap protecting the valve.

I just don't want it rolling around for two hours. I'm not attaching it to the bottom of an aircraft.

It's been a pet peave of mine that I only have corner attachments in my GMC bed. If I had one halfway, this discussion woudn't be happening.

That’s another one of the reasons I don’t like pickup beds. There’s nowhere to tie a anything down.

To my mind it's a heck of a lot better then nothing.
And better then what happens a lot.
What I have done is using the load bar that goes across my bed,
is to bring it back close to the tailgate and snug itin place and strap a cylinder to it.

Strap it to a pallet. That's DOT legal.

With the ends hanging out? Or does the skid need to be the length of the bottle?

Why not put one in than, rather that peeving about it? I have a set of canoe/cargo racks on each pickup made of angle iron and square tubing, I can tie off anywhere along the sides and/or front of the bed. They also offer a solid handle for my two contact points while climbing into the bed.

A tie down at rail height is rarely of any use at all to me. And, it is desireable to keep the floor free to slide in 4x8s or anything else. plus I have a liner. So, not so easy.

Get two lengths of 3/16 or 1/4 chain stretched between front and rear tiedown loops on each side of the bed. Use this for intermediate tiedown anchor point. It won't be as strong as a real tiedown point, but sure beats nothing. Good for those one inch straps with hooks.

What's the difference then, between the factory not putting in tie points and you not doing it yourself because "They're inconvenient." My drill went right through the plastic bed liner like it was... plastic. There are all manner of ways to tie off between the factory tie points and the rails of my rack. Not having a suitable way to tie off is not an excuse for doing it half a$$ed, especially when transporting something like a compressed gas cylinder.
