Reminds me of a story from a friend of mine. His Dad was a contractor, and he worked for him summers. One of the crews, the head guy had a big ol black Lab that went everywhere with him. A lot of times they would drive to lunch, park, leave the windows wide open, and the dog would sleep down in the footwell. One day they are at lunch and a couple cops are in the place also that they were chatting with a bit. As they are sitting there, they can see the truck and see a couple guy skulking around it. The cops say, That your truck? You want us to do something about that? The head guy replies: Just wait a sec. They are about to get a big surprise. Now you can't see a black dog down in the footwell on a bright sunny day... So they get close and start to reach in, and 80 lbs of snarling, barking, snapping attitude comes halfway out the window and scares them half to death so they run away with brown trousers. The cops and the crew are laughing their butts off inside. Problem solved! Otherwise the dog was a pussycat...

I once walked to a Toyota Landcruiser to check if the Dobermann was ok on a a hot summer day. As soon as i neared, it barked rabidly and started ripping its nails through the black leather door panels and rear bench :D

I thought naah... he'll be allright. And the boss might learn a lesson from what it did to the upholstery :D

Years ago when I was doing mortgage loan inspections I stopped by a house on a hot summer day. The first thing I saw as I approached the door was a young Doberman out in the sun, with an empty water dish. I remember thinking that the owners should have put it someplace where he wouldn’t dump it; but as I went over to the outside faucet to fill it I found the dish for their other dog, who was tied out on the opposite side of the yard with no chance of getting a drink.

I once was stopped by a cop for a bs reason who asked for my registration and license from the passenger side. For whatever reason he tried to hand them back to me from the passenger side in front of my normally docile heeler. Cop got bit and brought it on himself for stopping me in the first place and for reaching into my vehicle.

That just seems stupid. Dogs protect what they feel is theirs.

There is a one man electrical contractor who said without his dog he couldn't be in business... Dog watches the world go by but if the feet stop a walking he perks up and moving towards the truck starts growling.

Speaking to the beat officer we both commented on crime is down... I said trash/liter is down 2/3 and illegal dumping has stopped.

Don't know how long it will last but the change is profound.

Only a note on having a pet inside a parked vehicle is that now it is considered animal cruelty...

I had a dog like that. Once some friends of mine stopped by when i was out. The dog climbed out of the pen, came over to see them, slowly wagged his tail, till they walked up the stairs to the door. He got in front of them and stood in front of the door and growled. They backed off and he came down to walk with them as they continued up the drive toward the back of the property. Same thing, they walked up to the shop door, he walked to the door, growled and they backed away. Same in my open Jeep, he didn't bother anybody till got too close and he'd growled.

The right dog is simply amazing...

Had one that loved to find things... so I would hide the same play toy and say go get it... the Australian Shepard methodically searched almost in a grid sniffing and bingo... it was a lot of fun to watch... none of the others ever had such ability.

When we had baby chicks the Siberian Husky thought tasty little snacks... the same Australian Shepard guarded those chicks like babies... and was also great with the kids.

Now the Siberian would sit at a gopher hole for days until he got the gopher... always did!

We just don't see dog in the back of trucks anymore... tied or not.

Years ago had a good size German Shepard. A very sharp dog. Breed into him, I was not smart enough to have any idea how to train a dog. He loved to ride with me, in the back of my pickup. One hot summer day we had been to father in laws farm helping and both my dog and I were tired. Highway Patrol had road license check, in the 70's rather common. I open my window and reached for cards in the glove compartment and here someone give a surprised sound. Then I remembered my Shepard. He had gotten up to see why we had stopped and his head was covering a big part of my window. The office said, I did not know you had company or such. My Shepard did not growl, bark, nothing. He just was looking at the office as the officer stood was practicing Social Distancing and never saw my license, insurance card or registration card. Forty some years later still chuckle at it.
