Sudbury is a smallish town in northern Ontario known for generations as a major nickel mining community.
Probably make a lot more money if they mined for dollars instead, silly Canucks. 🤪

And likely not a single person in Sudbury though of that. :)

It could be legal, just barely, but I wouldn't trust it.

From the FMCSA handbook:

Securement requirement

  • Use at least two tiedowns at both the front and rear of the cargo to prevent movement.
    • Side-to-side
    • Forward and rearward
    • Vertically
Note: More tiedowns may be required to satisfy the general cargo securement requirements. The Standard states: "The sum of the working load limits from all tiedowns must be at least 50% of the weight of the cargo."

A 1' tie-down has a WLL from 400#-1100#. Assuming 4 tie-downs at 500# WLL (TSC cheap tie-downs - $10.99 for 4) since we can't see the front, you get 2000# total. Depending on year the car is from 3400# to 3800# curb weight.
Front straps are a pair of 2" strap tire baskets, should be 3300# WLL each.
Here is their video with directions:
Rear straps are for peace of mind (and should be combined with the chains shown in the video).

That's actually called a "1500HD". GM made them a few years. It is crew cab, 6 1/2 bed, and that one actually has Quadrasteer rear steering (you can tell by the mini-dually flared fenders).
It has a heavier rear than the standard 1500 but I still am not sure it is rated for that camper ....

It's very obviously at least a 3/4 ton in the picture. The 8 lug hub is a dead give away.

If it is a "quadrasteer" truck, they were available up to 3/4 ton.

Quadrasteer - Wikipedia

They were also available in the 1/2 ton trucks, note the picture shows a hub with 6 lugs:

I had a buddy that bought one new, and the biggest problem he had was excessive tire wear on all 4 tires. Couldn't keep either axle aligned.

It could be a 3/4 ton truck, but Chevy did in fact make 1500HD trucks and they are 100% 8 lug trucks

All of the 1500HD models are 8x6.5" bolt pattern. The 1500 non HD is 6x5.5" pattern

The 1500HD is a 3/4 ton truck. They just came up with that idea to skirt some regulation.

The 1500HD was a 3/4 ton truck that ended up below the desired specs for a 3/4 ton industry category in crew cab configuration. So they sold it as 1500HD. It used the same aluminum wheels as the 2500 of the same era (as seen in that pic I posted earlier). So there really isn't a way to tell whether the camper/truck pic I posted is a 1500HD or 2500 since the truck was de-badged.

Whether it’s a half ton rated for a heavier load or a derated 3/4 ton really doesn’t matter. At the end of the day that camper was way too long for the pickup they loaded it onto.

Just FYI - Wikipedia isn't completely clear. GM did some name-changing over the few years they made QS vehicles. For some years they called the trucks "1500HD" and some years they called them "2500" (without "HD" at the end) while they call their true 3/4-ton trucks "2500HD" (with the "HD" at the end). Also QS was available in the Suburban/Yukon but only in the "2500" version. And like others above said ALL QS trucks were 8-lug (and also have the flared sides, even on the SUVs).

They never released the 1/2-ton 6-lug version. That was next on the drawing board and was being tested but GM canceled the design when the buy rate for QS was so low (as a side note the design was not as wide so the fender flares weren't needed as shown in the red truck pictured in the link).

The upcoming electric GMC Hummer and electric Silverado will have an even newer version of 4WS but I don't know if it is a Delphi system or designed in-house by GM.

If your buddy had problems he should have found a better alignment shop. The front wasn't an axle; it was IFS. And the rear wasn't hard to align since it was a solid axle with rack and pinion steering assist, but there is a special electrical adjustment you need to do after you adjust the toe.
