Last night a Tarp started to blow off of a semi in front of me... imagine a tarp flying back and covering your windshield.

I remember that was the plot of a CHiPs episode back in the '70's :D

the pic is unclear on the issue.

was it merely just too tall of a load, or was the boom lifted and free floating or 'bouncing'?

if it was just too tall when loaded, then secured or not meant nothing to it striking the bridge.

Properly loaded and secured, that machine will not exceed legal height, so it is a pic of someone hauling or towing something wrong.

BREAKING: Crash slows traffic on Hwy 59 at I-90 - County 17

Wording means something here.

The article you link still says it was too tall!

that means he must not have had the boom completely lowered or folded and curled enough.

no where does it show this to be an 'UNSECURED' issue.

Secured or unsecured.. if it is TOO TALL it will hit. you could secure it as much as you want. 1000 chains, and if it is too tall it is too tall.

Too tall MAY be a case of improper loading... it WON'T be a case of improper tie down.

Which was my point.

From the article:

"The boom of the excavator had not been properly loaded and secured. The extended boom exceeded the 16 foot, 8 inch height clearance of the underpass of I-90 on WY-59 causing the boom to strike the bridge."
I'm not sure what your point is. Having hauled similar loads, it's apparent to me that it was neither loaded nor secured properly. It was too tall because the driver did not load and secure it properly.

Oh, for crying out loud people! You sound like my kids bickering over things that, in the end, don't make a hill of beans worth of difference.

True and I'm done talking about it. I just thought it fit the title of the thread and some people might have been interested.

You proved my point, thanks. The boom exceeded the height.

It may have been improperly loaded.. But it wasn't a securing issue. The fact that the reporter chose to say loaded and secured does not seem to be supported by the evidence.

Loaded wrong to make it too tall seems to be it.
