Kind of a textbook case of what you instruct others not to do. Probably quite a pucker moment when the fishtailing started and when he hit the brakes and flipped the vehicle. Good job strapping the load down, however.

Is that a vehicle door stuck under the front of the trailer? Probably a story to tell there as well.

Not too sure what that is. Too late its been removed already so I can't go over and have a look. only about 500 yards away from me on the main highway at the end of a long sweeping downhill section. I think if he had lowered the front board, and the tailboard he could have got the load lower but still had too much weight behind the trailer wheels.

Wonder what the insurance company had to say?

It looks like the open rear hatch of the SUV that was pulling it.

Too much weight loaded to the rear took the weight off the tongue and made him prone to fishtailing. Which he likely did. But fishtailing is less when you're accelerating and worsens when you decelerate unless you hit the trailer brakes and not the vehicle brakes.

So, the light tongue starting the fishtailing but because the driver was accelerating he failed to immediately notice. When he did, he hit the vehicle brakes because he had no trailer brakes and was scared. That cause the trailer to try to pass the vehicle and the "lever" effect on the vehicle caused to flip.

Driver probably had little experience or he wouldn't have done the chain of events that ended with the conclusion he got. Luckily, it looked like he survived.

Insurance covers stupidity, else we would have a ton of denied claims. Many accidents, in retrospect, are from foolish or stupid decisions. They can deny a claim that is proven to be intentional, but that is very hard to prove and surely not the case in this instance. People have no idea how dangerous it is to have a tail heavy trailer. Maybe this thread will educate some folks before they try this.

I had to carry some long boards in a little utility trailer, so I put two 55 gallon barrels in the front of the trailer and filled them with water. Even with the boards hanging way out the back, it pulled nicely. Too late for this guy.

I occasionally haul a wide and tail heavy implement over the road. To counter the weight, I added a bolt-on post to the front of the tongue that allows me to slide on the required bar bell weights. Got them cheap at a thrift store. Anyway, they work great.
