Everyone was trying to keep their vehicles from being sandblasted by the idiots uncovered load of sand.
Best way to not get sand blasted would be to get in front of him.
Again, if there was room/time enough to pass you, there was enough time/room to pass him.
I saw a nicked-up car here. The owner told me he followed the sand-spreader / snow plow truck too close in a snowstorm waiting for an opportunity to pass it. (The 'sand' is decomposed granite with all sharp edges). Oops.Only if you're willing to have your vehicle sand-blasted as you are accelerating towards him to pass him. This guy hung back instead. That's not a bad choice.

A little off topic here but... last winter I was coming down Hwy 50 from Lake Tahoe to Carson City in buddy痴 brand new truck during the beginning of a wicked snow storm. The wind was blowing up through the canyon and within 10 minutes the sand blasting was so bad on front and side of truck he needed new paint, lenses, windshield, and trim pieces. Don稚 remember the amount but it was well into 5 figures.
