Brains and common sense have been slowly bred out of the population.

Lack of common sense drives more safety regulation and enforcement. Making it harder for people that can actually think and reason to get stuff done.

If we are paying attention, "Common Sense" is learned from doing, or seeing others doing, successfully or not and extrapolation to our current situation. A large number of the safety regulation and enforcement is there because people have found out that it's a really bad idea to do x, the rest of them are cr@p that are created to justify jobs, etc.

An example of a "common sense" moment for my nephew was when we were hiking with two other people up to a rock outcropping. My nephew and i had gotten up to the top, before the other two people. He wanted to roll a rock down the flank of the hill. Thank goodness he asked me first and we had a short discussion about what he wanted to do and came to his own conclusion that it would be a bad idea for a number of reason's. Just as we finished talking, the other two people popped up from below, where he had wanted to roll the rock. The look on his face was an OMG look.

For me this thread, where i've learned quite a bit about and a few OMG moments where i've thought, why didn't i figure that out as a bad idea.

Common sense can be very specific...

My farm cousins have totally different common sense than we growing up in the city...

My brother was throwing some rocks in the hayfield... my farm cousins started yelling at him... brother said what's the problem... it is just a field and the farm cousin said until the mower hits one of your rocks.

When the farm kids came to visit in Oakland... they had zero Street Smarts... my rock throwing 7 year old brother said they were as dumb as rocks...

Different situations with individuals out of their element.

A good way to get yourself shot or beat up is to "Disrespect" someone... or even the perception of disrespect such as laying on the horn because traffic is blocked on one of the neighborhood streets... I told my cousin we wait or turn around... he thought that was crazy and was going to get out of the car and cuss the guys out after they flipped him off... I told him this isn't the farm and Dad said never put yourself in a bad situation... be smart about it.

I've posted my Grace of God trailer story before...

My brother and I both teens transported a injured horse to UC Davis... he thought I hitched the trailer and I thought he did... going down the interstate and a truck flags us to pull over... the safety chains were sparking... what was worse it the hitch was not latched!!!

Still gives me shudders all these years later thinking of what could have happened... not to mention having a horse in the trailer...

To this day... if I am driving anything with a load or trailer... I check no matter who helped... and this goes after a stop when I leave the rig...

Kids near a Denny's thought it would be fun to open the hitches of trucks stopped for lunch at one of the Endurance Rides...

Same here, any time I stop, I check my cargo, hitch, and safety hardware. Walk around and check hub temps and tire condition. If I go in somewhere and come back, gotta walk around again just to make sure no one had a cute idea for a prank. I'd like to be the opposite end of the spectrum compared to the pic I posted.

I think that's why the phone company techs are required to put out cones when they park. To force a walkaround when they are ready to leave.

I saw a frightening gif recently. FedEx driver 'filmed' a toddler in front of his tire - opposite the driver side - after making a delivery. Momma had no idea her kid wasn't inside the house. Everyone thankful he had looked around before driving away.

*shudder* I can't even imagine being a driver and coming across that. At the same time, I don't understand how parents can just let their kids roam like that. Out in a field exploring the outdoors is one thing, in the concrete jungle is a whole different game. I have a two year old and both the wife and I always know where she is.

I'm so old that when I was a child, I didn't even have a cellphone or pager for my parents to get ahold of me.
Got on my bike & I might ride to a town 15 miles away. Even drank water out of the hose & didn't die.

I get irritated at the sight of a bike rider wearing a helmet! When I was four or five, riding the biggest tricycle that Canadian Tire sold, I had a rope and maybe ten ton hook wrapped around the handle bars. Long story short, going at a good clip down grade on a concrete side walk, hook goes into front wheel spokes, I go *** over tea kettle, head hits concrete, blood everywhere! No ER visit. Walk it off!

What's with these bubble wrapped people?
