I have heard Dovetail and Beavertail used with Dovetail being MUCH more common. I have also heard Beavertail used to refer to a flatbed semitrailer where the last 10-15' tilts down with hydraulics for loading.

I could be wrong too (though that never happens :)) but I believe beavertail is the correct term, dovetail was used mistakenly and since it's familiar to most people it just spread as being "correct." Duck tales was a cartoon , but in seriousness I believe it was just misunderstood (from an already inaccurate term) and the name stuck as well... like "duck" tape. I guess I just get used to all the different terms people use, and continue to believe that my logic is correct.

I guess this comes from one of my first jobs at a trailer manufacturer, thay called them beavertails and it was the first name I associated with them, so any other name sounds wrong. It is also the name that makes the most sense to me.

A wood dovetail is tough to make. I think the trailer terms are a regional thing. Like gooseneck or lowbed or 5th wheel.

Around here gooseneck and fifth wheel don't even refer to the same thing.

Here neither, which is good, because they aren't the same thing at all.

Around here gooseneck is a 2-5/16 ball in the bed. A fifth wheel uses a king pin like an RV or semi. And all trailers that slope at the rear have a dovetail.

I have always considered a short and shallow angled tails to be dovetails and the steeper tails to be beavertails.

I have a dove tail goose neck trailer with a king pin that attaches to the truck's fifth wheel
