Reminds me of a story I read, I think it was true: A wife related she was dead tired coming home from vacation and was napping in the front seat. Dad, driving, told the kids to be real quiet and to be ready to scream when he raised his hand.

Then he pulled in close behind a big towtruck running 60 mph that had a semitruck cab in tow; with the semi nose pointed backward toward them.

Raised his hand. Kids screamed.

Wife said when she calmed down she told the family they could get their own dinner that night.

:D

A rollover crash snarled traffic on northbound US 23 Friday afternoon. It happened around 3:10 p.m. in Tyrone Township on northbound US-23 between Center Road and White Lake Road. Livingston County MI. Undersheriff Mike Murphy tells WHMI preliminary investigation shows a Ford F-250 was pulling a travel trailer and started to sway. Murphy says the driver was unable to maintain control, went into the median and rolled over several times. Everything inside of the trailer was basically destroyed including four wheelers and motorcycles. The female driver was hospitalized for injuries to her hand but was alert and conscious at the scene. Two passengers were treated and released at the scene by Livingston County EMS. Seat belts were worn and no drugs or alcohol are suspected. Murphy says the trailer was also hooked up properly.

Some people poo-poo them (mostly people that haven't tried them), but I'm a fan of properly adjusted weight-distributing hitches. I haven't had one to play with yet, but I can see where you might be able to tail-load a toy-hauler to the point where you don't have enough tongue weight. Coupla big ATVs or deckers, empty fresh water tank.....

Stuff can be replaced, so the outcome was not that bad.

He probably had a toy hauler. It looks like he had two four wheelers, maybe a side by side, and a dirt bike. They were most likely loaded past the rear axle making the tongue light.

Correction...if you read it, it was "She" not "he". only thing you can do is back off the gas and not hit the brakes, and hope it calms down enough before it goes ballistic... Too many people spike the brakes...bad move.

Not sure how far this garage traveled before it was pulled over. I was heading home from church and saw this about noon today. Its still sitting there tonight.

I will ask my brother in law about it. He's south of Tower Hill close to the green house. They go to church in Shelbyville. He keeps up on all the gossip.

Are you referring to tow vehicle/trailer brakes as a system or trailer brakes only?

I worked as a porter between RV Sales lots my first summer out of high school. The experienced porters told me to quickly push and immediately release the brake controller if a trailer started getting squirrely on me. I've never (yet) needed to try it but have that advice in the back of my mind almost 40 years later.

Now I'm not sure if that was / is good advice or not.

Yes it works but it has to be done when the trailer is 'mostly' in line with the truck and not way out to the side. That's where the release part comes into play. You have to pulse the trailer brakes in time with the sway.

I was talking about the vehicle brakes - the brake pedal. Most inexperienced people jam on the brake pedal and that is the beginning of the end, as you know. If you are wise enough to use the trailer controller to pull it back in during an emergency, then more power to you. I doubt most average folk could pull that off.
