Saw a pickup pull out of Home Depot the other day with a pallet of something fairly light like bags of mulch. Pallet was stacked about twice as high as you'd normally see, extended about two feet over the cab roof. No tailgate, nary a rope or strap in sight.

I spent a summer working outside lawn and garden for Home Depot. The amount of vehiclular abuse we saw on a daily basis was insane. It was bad enough that we weren't allowed to secure loads for customers and we could refuse to load vehicles if we didn't feel comfortable with the situation. I regularly saw folks pull out of the lot with a full, stacked pallet of 60 bags of mulch in the back of a pickup truck without strapping it down, or unrestrained bales of pine straw/wheat straw stacked above the bed rails. Another frequent sight was mini vans so loaded with block that the suspension was completely compressed.
