This happened a couple weeks ago here in SC and I just now thought to post a link to the story. The dump bed of an 18 wheel dump truck hit an overpass on I-385 near Greenville. Somehow, the dump bed raised up, and first hit a large traffic sign over the interstate, then it hit the overpass.

I've never been around that sort of equipment but wonder is it even possible to raise the dump bed from the cab, while you are in transit (at speed)?? Seems like there would be some sort of interlocks to prevent that. If that is not possible, then how could it "malfunction" and raise up by itself??

The link has a video news story about it, but you'll probably have to watch a short commercial first.

Sounds impossible but it happened out here too, long ago. (about 1965). A long semi's dump bed raised, struck a pedestrian bridge across the freeway, and dropped it across all the lanes. Just before commute hours. On the only freeway (at the time) into San Francisco from the south. So apparently its possible.

It's happened a few times around here also. From.all my buddies that drive truck, it requires a driver with zero ability to pay attention to what he's doing for it to happen.

About 15 yrs ago, we had a guy hauling an excavator that clipped 3 (yes three) overpasses cause the boom wasn't fully lowered. Ya'd think he'd have stopped after the first one
