We didn't get our first stock trailer till 1990. Before that it was a 3/4 ton long bed truck with stock racks. Cattle had gates tied over the top to stop jumping. Sheep and hogs top was left open.

After a 2800+ lb bull was taken to market very slowly. He only fit at a 45* angle in the bed. And the truck leaned with his weight shifts. My grandfather decided that that was enough and got our first trailer. Still have it too.

I remember the 1 ton chevrolet pickups with stock racks... some had GMC... can't recall seeing anyone with a Ford.

The ranch horses would just jump right in and two would fit side by side... most Arabs and Quarter Horses...

Sometime we thought they looked forward to riding after a day rounding up stock...

When I saw the first pic, I thought, "Such a shame to lose a good 18-wheeler like that.

Then I saw the second pic, and thought, "Oh, it's a Volvo." :D

I'm surprised the trucking company doesn't use special GPS devices that take truck height and weight into account. Driver was inattentive for sure and undoubtedly on an unfamiliar route so the company should have anticipated this type of problem with a big truck. Driver was not the only idiot.

follow a cross country truckers video adventures and he has a GPS that has all those details on it.... So it would have told him about it...But then he talked about some truckers refuse to use them and use maps only.

I know. I

Driver knew the bridge and wasn't lost!

From:
Trucker Destroys Historic Bridge Because She Didn't Know How Many Pounds Six Tons Was

Ms. Lambright was aware of the iron bridge stating she had driven on it several times in her personal vehicle and was also aware of the posted signage "No semis, weight limit of 6 tons." When asked by Paoli Police why she continued through the bridge knowing the weight limit was only 6 tons she admitted to not knowing how many pounds that was. She was advised the weight of the vehicle at the time of the crash was close to 30 tons.

If they hire morons to drive, that is all the more reason to invest in electronics to avoid such incidents. A GPS based alarm could prevent even most imbeciles from such a mistake. Trucking company still partly responsible for allowing driver who doesn't know how much truck weighs to drive for them.
