He was also too busy talking on the phone to notice me honking at him.

I want to see what happens when he tries to backup?

I was trying to get him to look at me so I could motion back towards the trailer ...no luck.
He thought you were honking to criticize his swerving and driving slower than traffic while his attention was focused on the phone call.
He's learned to ignore that, he hears it all the time.

I've learned a new procedure for interacting with people on the phone: particularly on foot - in a supermarket etc - I'll always seize the right-of-way. It's pointless to wait courteously for the talker to proceed first since that won't occur until eventually there's a lul in his (more often her) conversation. Nearly always they don't even notice. Occasionally he (she) looks surprised that someone has suddenly appeared in the space they were about to blunder forward into. Sorry princess, we don't have time for that. You aren't the center of the universe after all.

Driving I consider the same strategy, use it occasionally when it isn't a question of safety for example at a 4-way stop where I could clear the intersection even if he started unexpectedly. See him on the phone and he's obviously not calculating who should go first ... I go first. Or if a pedestrian stops crossing the street to text, I'll drive very slowly around him instead of waiting for him to finish his text and look up. Slow enough that I would be standing still by the time he walked into the side of the car. With full consideration for actual safety - I don't offer courtesy to a walker or driver who isn't sharing in the same reality with everyone around him.

Should have driven up on the ramps like Night Rider used to do and saved yourself some fuel mileage.

So true!

Should have driven up on the ramps like Night Rider used to do and saved yourself some fuel mileage.

The thought did cross my mind, but I think the ramps were a bit too close together :D

That ...... would certainly be a video to see the look on the guy's face after he has hauled you down the freeway 20 miles, before he even notices you.

California, have you seen the video where the guys mount real train air horns on a Toyota or the like and sneak up on people, oblivious to the real world, and blast them with the horns? Might be an idea there?
