apparently the draw is that they are built on the Suburban platform so they have a better ride than the pickups
Finally, an explanation for something that baffled me.

My neighbor in town had one. Fancied herself a cowgirl (in urban Northern California). Had Longhorn horns and Navajo tapestries for decor in her living room.

Occupation? Exercise instructor for ladies only.

About 5 or 6 years ago when the Canadian dollar was stronger and US gas was in the 4 dollar a gallon range and gas in Canada was 5 to 6 dollars , I used to see certain ethnic Canadians on their way back to Canada from Costco in Bellingham WA with 4 five gallon gas cans strapped to one of those receiver hitch racks plus as many cans as they could fit inside the vehicle including the back seat with the kids. It was less than 20 miles to the border and Canada Customs apparently had no problem with bringing a potential bomb into the country. I was driving a dump truck on the road 5 or 6 trips a day and would see this on just about every trip.

So how is that more of a potential bomb than a truck with a 48 gallon gas tank full of gas? The fact that they are in the open, sure, but a truck with 48 gallons of gas in the tank has the potential to do just as much (or more) harm. I'm not sure what the concern is other than avoiding Canadian taxes.:confused:

The container isn't as good, but I agree it's not much of a bomb. Liquid gasoline isn't a good bomb anyway.

It's not a bomb until the vehicle gets rear ended. Go watch the demonstration of an early Ford Pinto getting rear ended. Secondarily, I wouldn't load gasoline around my kids. I would hope you wouldn't either.

I just saw the same thing at Safeway in Bellingham a few weeks ago. Must have had a dozen or so 5 gal. jugs stuffed into a Chevy sedan. BC plates on the car.

I don't have kids and it's going to take a heck of a impact before a gas can in my truck gets crushed.

The situation described was multiple gas cans on a receiver platform rack plus gas in the SUV with the kids. Way different from a pickup. Still, I would not carry gas inside the passenger compartment with my kids.

That does it I am going to have to stop hauling gas in the back seat in those garbage cans when I take the kids, or do you think it would still be OK if I just quit smoking while I am doing it;)

I miss read the original post and missed the inside the vehicle with kids part. Agreed, bad idea.
