Gasoline on a hitch-receiver platform is a bad idea. Worse: I'm repeating here a post I made a year ago:

Some guy brought back a utility trailer loaded with gasoline he had bought cheaper in Texas.

He was doing maybe 45 on the freeway and got rearended by a semi.

Miraculously a little Honda that would have been crushed between them saw the semi coming and ran off the road at the last moment. No major injuries.

I just saw the same thing at Safeway in Bellingham a few weeks ago. Must have had a dozen or so 5 gal. jugs stuffed into a Chevy sedan. BC plates on the car.

And this only seems to keep getting worse. I suspect that breathing in all the gasoline fumes keeps destroying any brain cells that would be responsible for signaling this ain't a good idea! Since now owning only diesel cars, and Costco doesn't carry diesel up in this area, I don't have to contend with the delays from these folks filling their hordes of containers.

The problem wasn't the gas, it was going 45 on the freeway.

Around here it doesn't matter how fast you go, BC truck drivers are going to ride up on your tail. Speed limit is 60mph for trucks; totally ignored; it's bad enough that that's the case, but to also tailgate!

It's stuff like that Texas incident that makes it clear why there are regulations on fuel transport. Yes, regulations ain't going to save you from "stupid," but they may lessen repeat performances by the same individuals.

I don't have much of an issue hauling a few cans in the back of the truck but I can't imagine cans inside a vehicle. It's OK to vaporize yourself but not kids or innocent bystanders. Where's Darwin when you need him.

Around here, it's not uncommon to see guys fill up totally unapproved containers like 55 gallon plastic drums, with gas, loaded on the back of a trailer for ag use. There are so many things that can go wrong with that. Really, you have to wonder how so many have lived so long with the things they have done.

That does it I am going to have to stop hauling gas in the back seat in those garbage cans when I take the kids, or do you think it would still be OK if I just quit smoking while I am doing it;)

Just make sure you throw the match and cigarette out the window and it's all good! :)

The situation described was multiple gas cans on a receiver platform rack plus gas in the SUV with the kids. Way different from a pickup. Still, I would not carry gas inside the passenger compartment with my kids.

Yes, it's a bad idea, but I don't think that is what the customs department's concern is, and it's really far from being considered a bomb. Parents do a lot of really stupid things with and to their kids, but not all are illegal. Sadly many appear to have too few brain cells to be competent parents.

How are you supposed to haul gas if you have only an SUV or car? Many don't have the luxury of having a pickup as many of us do. It's not the preferred way, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
For the most part, gas cans are pretty sealed, and fumes aren't generally going to just leak out and cause issues inside an SUV or a car. Heck, my cans will hold pressure for a long time and pop the lid off if the can is nearly empty and it sits in the sun. The danger with a gas can inside the vehicle comes more from the weight of the can flying around in an accident than it does from gas exploding. How many of you completely tie down that case of soda that can become a deadly projectile in an accident?

I saw today the situation described a few pages back: small dually truck, maybe a roofer or something, pulled over with the utility trailer behind him off its hitch ball, plowing on the ground, but kept with the truck by the safety chains. Kid was on the phone and I got the impression he had been sent out with unsuitable equipment and told 'don't worry nothing will happen'.

Regarding: "I don't have much of an issue hauling a few cans in the back of the truck but I can't imagine cans inside a vehicle."

About 5 years ago I ran out of gas in a rural area. I was walking to town when a woman in a pickup with extended cab offered me a ride. Went to the gas station, got 2 gallons of gas in a 2 gallon plastic gas can, and she said: "I just have to pick up a friend on the way to taking you back to your truck."

Friend gets in the extended cab, sitting right behind me, and lights up a cigarette. With me sitting there holding 2 gallons of gas. I can't remember why I didn't just put the gas can in the pickup bed but I sure remember that cigarette being lit ...
