Semi doesn't make it up an icy hill in Texas a couple of days ago.

Semi Truck Completely Miscalculates Its Ability To Drive Up An Icy Hill - Digg

Man I know that feeling - one time 35 years ago on I-94 trying to climb the hill out of Valley City, ND in rear wheel drive Monte Carlo. Fortunately I got off to the side in some snow where it stopped going downhill but wouldn't go up either. Had to get a little help from a tow truck who happened to be very close - I wonder why?

I hate rear drive cars with a passion. I used to have Fiat 125 long time ago. If it sat on wet grass overnight and sank in it little bit it would spin wheels next morning and I had to push it to make it move. When going skiing I had to put three passengers in the trunk to make it uphill if the road was even slightly slippery.

Several years ago I was working in Siberia. The guy who picked me up to take me to the site was just flying doing 150-170 km/h on packed snow. Not slowing in curves. When I got out of the car I saw why we didn't die smashed on a tree by the road. All four tires had about 20 mm long studs on them. I guess they had more grip than bare tires on dry asphalt.

I have friends with VW Bugs and VW buggies and the traction they get from rear wheel drive is amazing...

When I was a kid in Nebraska, my mother always went to our local lumber yard in town, before 1st snow, ice, etc., and they would put a couple of bundles of asphalt shingles in her trunk, “on loan” until spring.

Back in the day I seem to recall the VW ad saying something like "this is how the plow driver gets to work." or something along those lines.....

There was a cute photo - or realistic drawing. I think it was VW tiretracks in new snow as the VW arrives at the municipal plow shed.

Added: here's the TV ad you likely saw. 1964. I never saw that, didn't have TV. I'm still looking for the magazine ad I saw.
