WOW - around here you can't tow ANYTHING from the local rental yard without a ¾ ton truck. When I went to get a stump grinder (small walk behind) they checked my truck tome sure it was at least a ¾ ton and had the correct hitch (6.7 Cummins Ram). They are every very picky.

They have custom built trailers that usually have a custom bracket for the machines so tie down straps aren’t needed. They’re built for the load and are much nicer than what’s pictured above. They are usually tilt deck. They check for an adequate truck, but I think they let you tow little stuff with half tons.

This happened so fast I couldn't get pictures... I was on the highway buzzing along and a pickup passed by in the far left lane (3 lanes). A bit after a large cardboard cover that would go on a small pallet type box came flying out of the pickup bed and hit the side of a car just ahead of me in the right lane taking off it's sideview mirror. All I could think of is if that car had been a motorcycle. Scary stuff.

Company I work for isn't quite as picky. That being said, you can't leave the yard with a skidsteer or mini x with out at least a 3/4 ton truck. We base vehicle requirements on the equipment weight and size.

I've sent customers down to Wally world or the local auto parts store to get the proper hitch before. I simply explain that it's not safe and I can't allow you to haul this 4500lb piece of equipment down the road with a 3000lb rated hitch. Most of them are pretty reasonable when you explain why there hitch won't do what you thought it would. They also aren't allowed to leave until it's strapped down properly, or trailer is hooked up properly.

I won't hook up a trailer or chain/ strap a piece of equipment for someone else. But I do supervise it and double check. Point out anything they need to watch for or adjust in a friendly way. My reasoning for that, is if they have done it correctly in front of me, then they should be able to do it when they are ready to return the equipment.

I'm also one of those people that doesn't trust anyone else to chain/ strap down a piece of equipment for me, and never allow someone else to hook up and latch a trailer for me. Just get my ball under the latch and I'll take it from there ;)

That's also why they have quit putting a side skirt on some metal fenders for tandom axle trailers. Side piece was tacked onto the inside of the fender to help keep mud and debris out. Problem was, the sheet metal would crack around the welds and eventually work loose. A friend of mine was towing a trailer and one of those side skirts flew off when he was doing 75 down the interstate. Motorcyclist had to duck and the metal sheet just missed the top of his helmet. Scared the daylights out of both of them.

After he told me about that, I remove them when ever I come across one. I just leave the wrap around portion in place.

Hope they are not going too far..
They won't. :D

That's the little HF 1,000 lb rated 40x48 inch trailer - I have two of them.

The trailers seem to hold up ok but that tire won't make it very far.

What does that little excavator weigh?

Same here.... 3/4 ton or better... of course if you don't have one you can rent one or they will deliver!
