That FAD started back in 1915 and is still going strong. When the Lincoln Highway was created, they encouraged people to drive across the US, and camp along the way. And they did and still do.

Guess I should Baa about now.

Is something popular over 100 yrs still a FAD???

I know the dictionary term for FAD is a short lived popularity.

I'm a sheep. Sign me up! I love life, I love to play with my toys and have fun. Life has been a heck of a great time so far, I'm not anywhere near done playing yet.

LOL!! I like your thoughts on the matter!

Hey if you can afford to do it, ENJOY it. Some people love Golf, me, cant stand it - but if they like they should do it if they can. Saving money is great, but if you can set things up so you are good to go in the future you hit a point where you need to spend some of your wealth and enjoy life, you never know when it may end....

I'm always trying to think of that balance. I have a Westinghouse pension that is locked at $804 a month. I have an ongoing pension from the place I work now (11 years so far) that should end at around $4800 a month. I'm on track for around $500,000 in my 401 and around $200k in my wife's. My wife and will both have social security, assuming that the program is still sustainable.

I pretty much feel that I'm going to be okay. But am I doing enough? Should my 401 get pushed more? How much is enough when your older?

I assume that when I'm in my mid 70's I'll not be going nuts buying things and going out, so my monthly income doesn't need to be more than about $8000. So my current mindset is to set up for around $8000 to 10,000 monthly income. I want to live comfortably, but I don't want to cut myself short in these upper middle aged years to over bolster the golden years when I may not even be alive.

Retirement is a frustrating compromise. I doubt that any of us really have a clear image of what we will need.

I've had boats, big block jet boat... Loved them, used them, sold them.

I bought a 28" camper last year, we plan to use it a few years and sell for maybe half of what we gave new. Call it rent...

I went through the sled pulling thing for almost a decade, sold all of that for ten cents on the dollar rather than store it.

The Jeep is my next loss, I'm around $60k into it, but my interest is fading and it's hard to sell something that's been used in rocks, is highly modified and has dents all over the body and frame. But when I'm done, I'll dump it for whatever.... I spent the money for the fun I had.

Oh, I went through the diesel truck thing back in the mid to late 2000's. I had to have thrown an easy $150k away in that game! Drag racing trucks and blowing up Cummins engines and transmissions gets pricy...

The gun thing... Somehow it made sense to buy 7 AR, 2 AK, 2 SKS, a couple Glocks, a couple M&P pistols, a couple 1911's, a couple tactical shotguns and a couple XDM pistols..... I've not fired a round in at least 5 years now. Oh, and I bought all of that in Democrat scare periods when prices were fabulous for the gun dealers! I haven't sold that pile off yet, but it crosses my mind now and again. What a waste of money sitting in safes....

I also have a dozen or so RC stadium race trucks, I got into racing in the clay stadium tracks for a few years.... So you know me.... I went all in! Those sit on shelves on my basement wall. There has to $25K in RC crap down there, all untouched for years now.

It's not sad though. It's all things I wanted to do, things that I enjoyed and was interested in, and done with money that I had after paying my bills, putting away for retirement and living life with my family. I don't need to be a millionaire at 80 years old. I need to suck in and savor life now while I'm youngish and have the ability to follow my interests... All while ensuring that I'll have a very comfortable and early retirement.

Nope. Not sad at all.

Sounds like a great use of disposable income to me! Congratulations on having some fun with what you have earned after taking care of your responsibilities. That’s the way America is supposed to be!

And speaking of Travel Trailers, wow, what is going on? I see the dealers popping up on the side of the highway more and more frequently, and then their stock grows like mushrooms. Who is buying all these things these days? And why now?

Because of the excellent economy, people have more disposable cash to spend on themselves and their families

It IS the economy. Right now everything is booming. Started hearing it coming in 2016 and it’s in full swing now. People are buying and building and making money.

As far as the travel trailers.....what I’ve noticed is the RV/Trailer parks along state highways all over the place. Went south recently and saw several new ones off I37 and came back through the backroads and saw more than I expected to see. A lot of it is still catering to oilfield workers but a good portion seems to be recreational.

Just got home from East Texas and again, everywhere I looked new RV parks along the roads.

Heading up to the Fort Worth Rodeo in January and will count the new ones I see on that trip.

My interests seem to be life long. I will never look for something to do, maybe barring health issues. You see it all the time, people get trailer, sits beside their house 350 days a year for five years, then moved to the end of the driveway or onto the lawn with a for sale sign on it for another five years. Same with many boats.

I bought mine new in 01. It gets used for 5 or six weeks a year. In 2 2 week increments and on or two 1 week increments. We like that we can take the pets. We can stop at more than 1 area. do different things along the way. It has 60,000 plus miles on it. I will use it more in a few years when I retire.

I would rather have a small to medium trailer than a large RV. But not so much, I have never owned either. But just my :2cents:
