So this just happened beside me...

Remember to check your trailer brakes, kids.

It is fairly simple. Line yourself up for a "See Side" back. You then back up going on a slight curve so you can just see the edge of the trailer. If trying to back in a straight line, as soon as you see the trailer, pull up about 6 to 8 feet to get straight and continue backing. It does take some practice, but it can be done. It is still easier than backing a hay wagon with a pickup truck, when you can't see past the load.

Traffic stopped suddenly because someone pulled out of a side street. We both hit our brakes but he jackknifed and ended up there most likely the trailer brakes weren’t working or adjusted.

Just glad he went that way and not into the side of me... Picture is from the parking lot I pulled into to get off the street.

Looks like the load was chained down ok. What is catching my eye is that it looks like the hitch failed and the trailer tongue is on the ground or close to it.

Looks like enough truck, enough trailer, etc..... not enough room.
Could have happened to a Honda civic. Everyone is running bumper to bumper now days.

The hitch is more proof of the non working/ poorly adjusted trailer break theory. I try to remember to adjust mine each time I hook up. I know what each of trailers needs to be at empty. And for most loads I know where to set it. I always try to set it to where I just can feel them helping. If your trailer brakes lock up on a panic brake it can be as bad or worse than no trailer brakes. Having them set to where they will drag the whole rig down with the help of the truck brakes is very nice. When they are set correctly it is amazing how quickly you can stop heavy loads.

I find it interesting that only about 10k bent the trailer hitch on a sudden stop Like that. I thought it would have been good for more.

Wish I had a picture, but I don't. Back in the mid 1960's, when the front wheel drive Oldsmobile Toronado first hit the market, the Olds dealer here had one hitched to a car hauler trailer via an EZ lift hitch with the tension bars pulled up, then removed the rear wheels of the car and hooked the safety chains tight. It was kind of awesome to watch him drive around town like that, but to a kid in a small town, it didn't take much to entertain us.:cool2:...Dan.

I can see that. My other thought was depending on the vehicle should of been using weight distributor system, and the driver lost control due to the unloading of front tires from the hitch weight, which in this case should be 1000# plus. And because of the undistributed weight it over stressed the hitch mounting bolts causing them to break on impact with the tree.
