Shear Bolt Advice

Evening,

I'm looking for advice on the proper shear bolt for my new 4' rotary cutter that I'm pulling behind my B2100 with 17 pto HP.

The bolt being used now is a 3/8" x 3", and I can't tell what grade.

Can anyone offer up advice if the 17 HP pto will shear a 3/8", grade 2 bolt, or do I need something softer?

Look at the hex head. On a SAE bolt, three radial bars indicates Grade 5. Five bars is Grade 8. No bars means it's a Grade 2. Metric bolts are marked differently.

Logic dictates you need a Grade 2, but manufacturer's specifications can trump that. Always check the implement operations/maintenance/parts manuals first.

My 4' Landpride rotary cutter takes a grade 2 bolt. If in doubt, get it as a part from the manufacturer. I've only gone through one so far after many hours of cutting. Its always a good idea to have a spare or two on hand so that you won't be tempted to use something else.

I'd be surprised if it was anything stronger than a grade 2 since it is 3/8.

I knocked the paint off the bolt head on the shear bolt in the cutter and it's a grade 5. I know about the bolt markings and grade, but I am hoping if y'all could tell me from experience if the HP PTO has enough scat to shear the grade 2, or if I need something softer.

Personally, I'd say no. But I'm not the manufacturer. Wisest move is to replace your shear bolt with whatever they specify. If that works out for you, fine. If not, only then would I resort to 3rd party recommendations or experimentation
