Shear bolt needed?

I recently bought a quick hitch for my JD 5310 and really enjoy the easier attachment of implements. Yesterday brought a new problem, however.

My tiller, which I use only once or twice a year, goes on fine, but the PTO shaft is too short. This shaft has a shear bolt at one end. In the past the shear bolt has broken when the tiller would, for example, dig up a rock.

I have another shaft from another implement that I could use, but there's no shear bolt.

So, my questions:
1. Can I safely use the other shaft without the shear bolt? My gut tells me "no".
2. I saw a PTO extender at TSC. It looks like it fits on the shaft of the PTO on the tractor and sticks out about 18", more than the 6" I need. Is this a safe and a practical solutions?

The PTO extenders are available in “different lengths”, made for your type of situation… /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On the implement end, the connecting yoke assembly will either be splined (no shear bolt) or smooth (with shear bolt)… and they can’t be interchanged…

You need some form of attachment method… which is yours?

Also, before you “cut down” the drive shaft from another implement, you will want to consider “if it will still be long enough” for the original implement it came with… /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Have you considered, “adding a slip clutch” to this "short" drive shaft, solving many problems… at once… /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think you're right, but I'm sitting here trying to picture what you have. There are at least two shear bolt arrangements I'm familiar with and haven't noticed any PTO driveshafts without either one of those two, or a slip clutch. So it sounds as if the two driveshafts you are talking about are not alike and the second one may not even fit onto the tiller. Of course I could be wrong; I just haven't been able to picture in my mind exactly what you have.
