Shear Pin Shocker

When to dealer and bought some extra shear pins for my new PHD (Bush Hog 2101 model). WOW! $8.00 each. What gives here? Anyone know of a cheaper pin that will not void warranty? Or should i just hope i don't break many.

Will a grade 2 bolt work? That's what my old brush hog uses.

Not sure? Owner's manual says to use only bush hog brand shear pins(of course). Don't know how much force it takes to break one of these pins versus the bolt.Not sure how i would find out either.

I did the same thing with my 2101. I talked to the BH area rep. about it. From what I gathered it is just a grade two hardness but the kicker is that is has one diameter shaft and a different diameter threads. The PTO joint that it goes through has been drilled that way also. It all seams kind of stupid but, they did this so you wouldn’t put in a harder bolt and damage the pto shaft. It thing should have had the same pto shaft that the 2102 has. If it did we could use just a regular grade 2 hex bolt.

You can get a box of grade 2 bolts cheaper than couple of shear pins at that price,also nylon nuts work well for tighten.

Without having it actually in front of me... it's tough to visualize the difference between the x01 and x02 models...

But @ $8. a whack, I'd find a work around solution like using an equivalent grade 2 bolt for shearing purposes... You may also want to call a few "distant" Bush Hog dealers with part number in hand and "confirm" $8. is a "standard" price...?

Sounds to me like they want you to by thier $8 shear bolts.

Yep, those nylon lock nuts work great. I used to carry a bag of grade 2 bolts and washers in my truck and they were pretty inexpensive.

The 2101 and the 2102 use the same gearbox but the pto shaft is lighter duty on the 2101. A normal shear bolt shears on both side of the yoke at the same diameter on the bolt. On the 2101 the double size pin is designed to shear on the larger end and also on the smaller thread area. The amount of strength would be somewhere between the two different bolt diameters. The rep. said that if I drilled the yoke out for the larger size, then the amount of shear would be more than the pto shaft was made for. What it boils down to is they made the 2101 less expensive by putting on a small pto shaft and then you pay for it in shear pins. I know that I will look at any PTO driven equipment that I buy a little closer be for hand.

Couldn't you use the same diameter grade 2 bolt as the 2101 pin... or one size smaller...?

Unless the PTO shaft yoke is that flimsy... you are mainly protecting the tractor PTO shaft {innards} and the gearbox mounted on the implement... /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
