that is a little different, guess you'd use that to compact the back fill in a trench.

My guess too, unless you had a lot of patience and time to burn.
(Which most of us don't).

That is a nice one. I haven't come across any that look like that. I like the way it will clean the mud from the roller. All the ones ive looked at have what looks like 1 1/2" round bar for the feet./QUOTE]

The packer feet come in many different shapes and sizes. There are also types specifically made for trenches.:)

So i finished my sheepfoot. The tank is about 2.5feet tall and almost 7ft long. It is 1/2" thick . I used a 7.5' 2"round stock for the axle. The feet are 3"channel cut 3"square. I have a 1" hole in the tank to fill it with water. Haven't used it yet but will next month. Ill just use it for my own projects and not on a commercial basis. Let me know what you think. . .The good and bad.
Thanks
Brian

WOW! Very nice job. Should have painted it yellow.
My only suggestion would have been to make the feet 2" x 3" x 4" tall.

PS: You sure can run a beautiful bead :D

thanks for the kind words. I had a lot of fun building it. I just hope it works. I do plan to blast and paint it, it will be left outside so gotta protect the steel.

Brian, not to be derogatory, but I think your roller will not work well. The open feet will collect mud/clay much worse than if they were filled solid. Once they get filled with clay, the amount will increase and a solid layer may fill in between the feet. I like your idea, I just think it needs feet that don't have voids that will work like claws. You might put a very stiff brush on the front to clear mud also. Either/both would greatly improve that sheepsfoot in my opinion. You've done an awesome job. I'm amazed for sure. I just think it needs a little more to be completely satisfactory.

Jim i thank you for your input. I too thought about the void under the channel, but to tell you the truth i just for tired of all the welding. Im going to try it as is and if it gives me trouble i'll clean them out and fill the holes. I do like your brush idea as well. My neighbour told me i shouldn't have staggered the feet, that way i could put a scrape between each row of feet. Live and learn right.
Thanks again for your input.

I think that looks great! If you have the clearance I think you could really improve its effectivness by welding some 2.5 or three inch round stock, as long as your space will allow, to each one of your square blocks, you could probably get away with heavy wall pipe which would be easier to come by, and the would just plug with dirt anyway.

Brian I know what your thinking about the welding. When the plant we landfilled for closed we shut the fill down till another company bought it. I wasnt keen on unemployment and a friend of mine was nearby on a job that was running a sheeps foot behind a 500 HP tractor. He told me they wanted to rebuild the feet on the foot. I pulled in and saw the beast. It was an old quad drum set up made to pull with a D9. We had to weld new pads on the feet to make the spikes. I would come home at night and take a pile of AR400 plates and put them on my pattern burner. Id cut out 10 5 inch pads per pass. Then in the morning Id weld them up The original pads had been worn off and run for years on a stone and clay fill. The spikes had been worn down to rounded tips. Id have to tack the pad then fill the the rounded area. Id run about 50 pounds of 1/8th 7018 per day. I never thought Id finish the first one then had 3 more to go.

These tanks were all filled with fuel since the late 40s I read the spec plate on it said all 4 drums combined held over 2000 gallons of fuel ballast. It was beats to move from site to site though.

I remembered reading this thread when the other day I passed by a small sheep's foot that appears to be for sale. I say "appears" as it's sitting along with a 2n/9n and an older AC D grader that have "For Sale" on them beside the highway on a piece of property with a big realtor's sign next to them.

Anyway, it's one of the smallest I've ever seen......probably 4' wide. Looked "construction grade" as opposed to a newer landscaping type unit.

Just an FYI if anyone's interested.......
