How much time you got?
Hey all

I'm having an issue with a Shibaura N844LT engine in a New Holland L175. The manual states that it requires 8 quarts of oil, however the dipstick tops out after about 6.5. When I put in the full 8 quarts it is 2 inches too high on the dipstick.

If it was a minor discrepancy I would chalk it up to manufacturing tolerances etc.. However this is half a gallon of oil give or take.

I see the oil capacities for the N844 and N844T are different and closer to me dipstick results. What could the difference be attributed to?

As far as I can tell the T is turbo and the L is stroke?

Is it possible that someone has replaced the dipstick with the wrong one?

Quite possible. That or it's damaged and missing pieces near the handle. There are remnants of rubber there.
I got a parts manual, and it lists the length, so I'm going to check that out tonight.

An other thing, common to a lot of tractor makes... is that the tube that the dip stick goes into is adjustable. The tube itself has long male threads with a nut and seal located where it screws into the block casting. Not that this adjustment is probably that long to make a 2" error on your tractor. But it could be part of the error. I do not think that any [ or many ] of the engine manufacturers [ or dealers ] ' calibrate this ' in the factory, and that you should adjust it so the dipstick reads correctly when you put the proper amount of oil in the engine, filter is full, etc...

The tube is just a hard flexible hose that is routed to the rear door for ease of access. It is possible it could have been damaged near the end and thus shortened and reattached.
Unlikely though as it looks to be in perfect condition.

Keep em coming, the more info the better

Old motor with a lot of sludge in the bottom of the oil pan that effects capacity or big dent in oil pan that also effects reading.

1000 hours, but no maintenance history. I'm going to send a sample of what I drained out to be analyzed.
Oil pan totally enclosed by skidplates, even the paint is perfect.

Old oil not fully drained? Could oil pan have two drain plugs that need to be removed as oil pan has raised area in the bottom to clear a brace or such?

Will check tonight. Manual doesn't say anything about another plug, or anything about initial fill vs oill change fill. Engine was warm when I dropped oil, level surface, let it drain for an hour.
After running for 10 minutes oil is still perfectly clean on dipstick, not contaminated by a bunch of old oil.

Still don't understand why the n844lt requires more oil than the n844t. I thought maybe it had a deeper oil pan because of the stroked crank, but after looking at the parts manuals, both engines use the same oil pan.
Now I see the LT utilizes an oil cooler, I guess it could be holding on to some oil.
