08' Kubota L3240 HST /cab
I just got my first tractor a L3240 HST with a cab [07] used with 224hrs on it. Bought it from a dealership ,and it's just like new but when I take it down the road in high it seems to take off good but then shifts down then back into high again. With the pedal to the floor it don't seem to go over 17 or 18 mph . I thought that the top speed should have been more then this . I spent more for this tractor then probably should have[23500], but I've been waiting years to get one and never thought that I'd be able to have one with a cab, so do anyone have a L3240 ? or could let me know if this is normal for this tractor? thanks!

Our L3830 GST will go 17-18 down the road, it doesn't seem to care if it is running empty, with a baler, hayrake or what have you. Perhaps it is governed to that speed?

I am looking at the my owners manual right now. The travel speeds are listed on page 9. For the L3240 top speed with 12.4-24 rear tires is 15.7 mph. That would be in HIGH range and your H-DS lever also in HIGH. If you have different size tires, that could vary.

I don't know what you mean when you say it shifts down and then back into high? Since it is hydrostatic there is no shifting of gears. Do you mean it feels like it has shifted into a lower range, and then back into high range? If for some reason it has dropped into a lower range, then your travel speed would also slow up. Quite extensively I might add. Top speed in MEDIUM range is only 7.4 mph. If for some reason your H-DS is dropping into LOW range, then top speed would be 9.4 mph. That too would be very noticable.

I think you have the transmission in Auto H-DS mode where the transmission will down shift when it is under load. You can turn this off by pressing the mode button. The top speed of my 5740 is around the same as yours. I guess this is as fast as they will go.

I guess what I ment to say was ,when starting to take off in high range it shifted into a lower range then into high range and sometimes shifts back down again before going back into high range to stay there. I looked and saw that I had the Auto H-DS mode on , I guess thats how this works, nothing like the old JD I use at work. This HST is going to take some getting use to. I see that the top speed sounds about right . thanks for the advice!!

If you turn that off it will stop shifting it self automaticly. You can do it by hand wit the lever on the left of the steering wheel.

You should take the time to read the manual for that machine. The hst+ tranny and the electronic intellipanel are not complicated to operate. I myself would not be happy with my tranny shifting into low gear while roaring down the road at full throttle? A simple switch setting would have prevented this?

Had a L3240HST+ and it does take some getting used to and familiar with the differences of this transmission. Once you get it figured out you will like it. When going down the highway in my current B the transmission feels odd when going down hill and the tractor starts exceeding the governed speed, it feels like it's trying to downshift to slow me down and I think the L also did this..

The hst response dial setting can make this even worse in auto H-DS mode.
I never use auto h-ds except for loader work but keep it in stall guard mode always.
The new trans does take some getting used to but it is a great trans.

I have the 5740 and it only is in turtle trans mode when first taking off or if you put it under some type of load like bucket work. If you are going down the road it shouldnt go into turtle. I found the best way to go down the road is to set the rpm to about 2 or 2500k then use the cruise it should top out around 18 mph. just be carefiul cause if you hit a big bump with the weight of the fel it could cause you too bounce alot and could bounce you right into a ditch or off the road.

i never take mine out of auto mode. sometime if picking up something real heavy where i dont want it to get out of hand i will manually put in turtle mode.

you have to be real careful when you have alot of weight on fel backing over a rock or piece of wood or into a hole in the ground can cause you to roll over very quickly, always keep your hand on the fel lever and be prepared to slam it to the ground if that weight is taken off the front it cannot roll over on you.
