Shinny (Semi-Pro)

We played shinny too except it was always on ice and we also called it pond hockey and there weren't any rules.

In Elementary school at recess & lunch we also played a game called "kill the man with the ball" (i kid you not). This consisted of one kid carrying the ball and 20-30 other kids chasing and gang tackling him when they caught him. It was a brutal game. Nowadays I gotta shake my head when they won't even let kids play tag in school.

Thanks for posting. :thumbsup:It brought back memories. We used to play "Yankees and Rebels" at recess. We even had girls playing Nurses and they would act like they were wrapping up our Battle Wounds. I remember football skirmishes and the Merry Go Round and the See Saws. I agree with others: We grew up in a "Special Era".:thumbsup:

Brings back so many memories, I went to a one room school my first two years until it burned down due to the coal stove overheating. I was inside when we heard FIRE, FIRE, FIRE and all of our fire drill planning and preparation went out the window. There was only one way out of the building as the windows had heavy mesh on them. Little kids were knocked down and pushed aside by the older ones, some ran right through the thin doors leading to the exit without even trying to open the door. I stood off to the side and was one of the last two or three to leave the building before the roof came down.

We assembled across the road to watch it burn to the ground as there were no fire departments. I will always remember when the bell tower came down and the sound of the bell ringing for the last time.

Many of us had to walk home as our parents were in the fields as were the bus drivers and no one had phones. Our lives were forever changed that day.

Hey 2Lane;

What wings do you have? I used to have a Cessna 140A. I loved that plane, and sold it to a very good friend. He even asked my permission before he would sell it!

Hah. I have a 1959 Chevrolet Impala Spt. Coupe and a 1960 Impala Spt Coupe...hence the "wings". Randy (Toppop) was kind enough to post a couple pictures a few months back in a thread entitled something like "Post your rides". I hate flying, although I have had to do plenty of it. I have to admit that I am a fan of WWII war birds, and would love to take a ride in a P-51, or a P-38 or a Grumman Hellcat or a Vaught Corsair or....

Hard to "ride" in some of the warbirds, as they are single seaters. Therefore, you'd have to fly them, not ride in them!

We had a 2-seater (trainer version) P-51 in a hangar in Guthrie, just North of me, but I messed around, the guy sold the plane and I missed my chance.

TripleR. I remember the heavy black mesh wire over all the windows. in the old school.. I never though about the fire danger, I think the mesh was on there to keep the balls and occasional rock from breaking the windows..Oh, boy we would have been trapped like rats in there if the fire was between us and the door.

As for the warbirds.. I too love all the old warbirds. I can remember the first time I saw a P-51 idleing on the runway, then the pilot giving it full throttle and taking off with a short roll then the extreme angle he climbed into the sky and the excitement of that sound.. I was impressed!

Did any of y'all play half rubber? Cut a $.10 cent rubber ball in half and try to hit it with a broom stick. Usually had a pitcher, batter and catcher. If batter swung and missed and the catcher caught it, batter out. At our house if you hit the half rubber over the house, home run. The farmer that farmed the field in front of the house disked up half rubber balls for 40 years.

That's why we were all skinny. Your behind didn't stay in the house. Not allowed. All we did was play outside.

The P51 has to be my favorite WWII vintage allied airplane, but there are so many, others too. I was able to take a quick tour of the Pensacola Naval Air Museum and I could have spent a couple of days in there.
