I had a seal replaced on my PT-180 brushcutter and after putting it back together the entire blade assembly came off the spindle. Terry told me he uses Loctite Red to keep the collar on the drive shaft but after two attempts the collar slipped off while doing some mowing chores.

I was on the verge of having the spindle tapped and inserting a bolt to keep the collar on but decided to try Shoe Goo as a last measure. After doing some brush cutting there are no signs of slippage. I will continue to keep a close eye on it but so far it is encouraging.

I suppose Loctite is similar to a very hard paint and may have a tendency to crack whereas Shoe Goo (though very strong) is just flexible enough to ride the vibrations out.

What is so amazing about Shoe Goo is not only will it plug a hole in the bottom of your shoe and make it waterproof, but it will also allow you to build up worn areas of the heel or sole. Some people call it liquid duck tape.

If you use locktite, it should be 680 for this application.

Actually, Terry said Loctite Red 270 but at the local hardware store all they had was Permatex High Temperature Tread Sealant. I figured it was basically the same thing. It is also red.

680 is for shafts and bearings and 271 is for studs. You chose!

Thanks. I'm not that familiar with the different Loctite products. It looks like Power Trac would provide a decent manual considering repairs are pretty much up to the buyer.

Why should they provide a manual??? That's what all of us are here for! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Mutual support. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

M.R. can you expand on why Power-trac should'nt provide a manual? This forum does provide a service that I'm sure we all agree is valuable but how does that take away from the need for a manual?

It doesn't... that was tongue-in-cheek. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Power Trac also needs to be detailed on their information. I'm told to use Loctite Red 271 by Power Trac and 680 by someone else. Right after I got my PT-180 I had a problem with the inner stem being ripped off when mowing. Power Trac sent me a plug that was way too big. These may seem like simple non-important things but to the one doing the repairs it is major. I still like my little green machine though.
