Shooting range

I live in a rural part of PA that is also "shooting country". Over the years, I've dug bullets out of the walls of my house & barn but never had one penetrate into the living area of the structure.

Not wanting to create a potential problem, I built my range into the side of a hill. It has a 10' berm with thick woods behind. The closest neighbor is a half mile away down range.

Any shooting range can be hazardous without proper precautions though.

Our neighbors built a berm back stop. Thankfully they are shooting south and our house is north of them. We have horses and my wife gives riding lessons/trains horses as her day job. Thankfully we have a good relationship with the neighbors. They will check in to make sure no one is ridding before they go out and shoot, and if we are they will wait. We try to say yes to them shooting as much as we can so when we say no they will respect it, and they always have.

I do not think their back stop is by any means large enough and I would not go over there and shoot into it.

That says maximum range…and I’ll give $1,000 to anyone who can make a .450 marlin fly 7k yards.

Wasn't a .450, but I did make a .44 fly 2000 miles

Please link to police report on that. Most rifles will have issues traveling 1600 meters let alone penetrating a plywood, insulation, drywall and carrying enough energy to hurt someone.

I easily found this news story which is a likely match; this looks to be the same story elsewhere.

That is not the same thing. In the article you quoted, the guy shot into the air. The bullet will achieve terminal velocity coming back down which is enough to kill someone. Shooting horizontally the bullet begins to lose velocity the moment it leaves the barrel.

These are maximum ranges, not ranges at which the bullet can penetrate a house and/or kill someone. Especially the pistol rounds.

Pretty sure this might be what he was talking about. No house involved. It was a girl on her way home from a party.

I didn't say it's precisely what he quoted, but it hits the same key words - a mile away someone got killed.

That chart should have also listed the vertical drop needed at the different ranges. Even 50 cal has a significant drop at those distances. But can still be lethal. Interesting.
