Looking to build a shooting rest.
Who has plans for an easy build?
Rifle, not handgun.

Just search homemade shooting rest and you'll find a bunch. When I worked for Remington, all we used were leather sandbags on all the test ranges and that was for 100's to 1000's of rounds per day.

Lotsa ways to build a "shooting rest". I used to manufacture a wide variety of monopods, bipods and tripods....and all of these were called "shooting rests". But I belive you are looking for a shooting table (or a shooting bench). No?

I've seen lots of plans for a portable shooting benches and designed some rigid steel frame benches with wood tops for our local rifle range.....and a few portables for my own use. Maybe a bit more description on what your looking for would help get you steered in the right direction.

I poked around on-line for pics.
90% of the pics were of bench rests made of titanium, with 34 different adjustment points, and 3 carpenter levels.

I thought I would ask here as we tend to be resourceful, and creative folks.
Cheap and easy is what I'm after.
A step above sand bags would be great.

I would like a rest which can be shot off a bench, or from the truck bed.
Not too heavy.

Any bi-pod and tri-pod ideas would be great.

This is the one I built for prairie dog shooting. The top is a hollow core door and the legs are the ones you buy to make folding tables. I cut the rear leg down to a single to give you room to sit. It is light weight so I could carry it to different shooting points.

FEMA... sandbags. Fill with sand. Adjust as necessary. Trying to duplicate something like the Caldwell Lead Sled seems like a lot of labor and $ for marginal return.

For my rifles I put Harris bipods on the front and then on my long range rifles they've got a rear monopod.

For supporting the rifle on a hood or shooting bench, I use a one-of-a-kind rigid foam front rest with a V in it.....and use a bunny ear leather rear rest filled with kitty litter. Purrfect!

I really like the front and rear rest as opposed to a metal cradel rest or a "lead-sled". Maximum versatility and better accuracy with most guns. If you want a lead sled....save your time and money.....I think your better off buying one than building one.

I would prefer to build vs buy.
Biggest reason is b/c I like the R&D, challenge, and time in the garage.

Luke, did you build your monopod?
Could you post a pic?

Rigid foam is a good idea, and I have some hanging around.
I'm considering using the foam from the inside of a hockey helmet.
Some guys use a mouse pad. Contors easily, readily accessible, and cheap.

I use the legs of old blue jeans and fill with sand. I usually end up in the bed of the pickup on a stool shooting over the cab....or over the hood.
A good rest is key to sight a rifle.

On my 50 the monopod is built into the stock.. Barrett M82A1.
Rem 700 has a "gun show" stock that had it as a feature. Dunno the brand.
