Shop in use at last!

Got the sheetrock hung, the wiring completed, the power tools back, the lighting all set, and am beginning to build shelving and cabinets to hold all the stuff. The only problem so far is with my Delta 15" planer. I have to fire up the woodstove and let the planer warm up for several hours before trying to use it, otherwise the cold belt is so stiff the breaker trips. Ah, woodworking in New England!

The other thing I noticed is it's a bad idea to stand under the eaves or to put anything there. With that metal roofing, when the snow lets go it ALL comes down with a resounding THUD!

But it sure is nice to not have to rake the roof anymore! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm sure you'll get lots of use out of the new shop Pete. I sure hear you on the cold shop tools front though. I had a flat on the front tire of the Kubota (nother issue /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif), but in order to fire up the compressor I had to set a small heater next to the compressor motor and warm it up. Oh to have a nice heated garage!!!

Glad to hear the shop is done Pete, Yea don't stand under the eves it can get dangerous with snow and ice.

That's got to be a big relief. If you have one of those halogen work lights, you could turn it on and put that next to your planer to warm it up. I use one of those on my torneau cover on my pickup in the cold weather. When I take the cover off to haul something, I can't stretch it enough to get it re-snapped. I just turn on the light and lay it on the cover aimed toward the back edge, and after about an hour I can stretch the cover enough to get it to snap. I bet it wouldn't take that long for the light to warm up your planer! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's a great idea, Garry! I have a few of those halogen lamps, all burned out, but have been meaning to get more bulbs anyway. Now I have an excuse!

It warmed up all the way to 33 degrees today, so late this afternoon I finally mounted the sub-panel in the garage and backfed the 220 cable. So now I'm not dependent on that single 15 amp 110 circuit running nearly 100' from the breaker box all the way to the far end of the garage! Had all the garage lighting, outlets, garage door openers, security lights, electric fencing and the livestock water heaters running on that one circuit...and now those days are over! The new power supply just might make starting them relucutant high draw items a thing of the past. Are you gona switch over to 220 for some of the larger motors?

Yes. The planer is already 220, as is the dust collector. I have plans to change the tablesaw and jointer from 110 to 220, but need to figure out how to do it. In the garage, the 60 gallon compressor is now the only big piece; everything else out there is small.

I'd like to do some finish work first. The doors and windows are reused from the original 2x4 framing. Since the conversion to 2x6 there's a bit of work to do so they don't all look like sunken eyeballs. And I'm still working on getting the layout right. I'm thinking a mitersaw station built right into the lumber rack, but not sure how to execute that plan just yet.
