As you get older two things really affect how much light you need, macular degeneration as mentioned above, and cataracts. I did not realize how dim my vision had become until my cornea transplant surgery. I did not have bad cataracts at that time, the doctor termed them 'age appropriate', cataract surgery was done to avoid having to go back in and potentially messing up the transplants. Things were much brighter after the surgery.
Painting the walls and ceiling of your shop will make a huge difference in useful illumination, my shop is a steel sided pole building, I finished the interior both for insulation and being able to paint the walls. It has made an unbelievable amount of difference. The lumen level under the led light fixtures is around 500, off of the white painted walls about 150, off of unpainted plywood it's about 25. You definitely want to paint the walls.
