Ok. This is a spin-off of a thread that Allen in Texas had in the Attachment forum. He had to put up some signs in his shop to get his point across to his son and his friends about "re-stocking" the fridge of beverages after working in his shop. That started a string of posts about shop rules. My opinion is that the open range has it's "unwritten rules" so my thinking is that the work shop should have it's as well. So....lets all add some rules that should be mentioned and not necessarily posted on the wall but are just common courtesy gestures. IE- restocking the fridge, etc.

Let the rules begin!

You get it out and use it you put it up when you're finished.

Here's another...

just because I do it (whatever "it" may be in my shop) don't necessarily mean you can.

after all, I make love to my wife. Don't mean it's ok for you to do so.

This came about because of a mess someone left in my shop and didn't clean it up. He said, Well, you made a bigger mess than I did. And just so you know, that particular feller ain't allowed in my shop anymore.

If I am gracious enough to borrow you something, do not make me call to get it back.

1) If you pick something up, put it back where it was... not where it goes.

2) At any point in the conversation, I have the right to fire up any power tool I am using. When the tool stops, we pick up the conversation right where we left off. You have the same right.

3) Hold the flashlight so I can see.

4) If you're in the shop, you are expected to be useful. Even if you only came out to ask me where the camera is, you are expected to comply when asked to "hold this for a second", etc.

I'm sure I'll think of more.

If you don't know how to use it: ask!

If you still don't know how to use it: don't!

Aw, just get outta the way; I'll do it, myself!

:laughing:That's got me written all over it!

Some more: If you show up at my shop more that twice to use my tools and we're not already bardering then think about giving me some money towards the electric bill.

If the door is closed I'm not open for business neither is the shop.

There's a broom and a trash can for a reason.

This isn't a politically correct shop...cursing, cigar smoking and coffee drinking are encouraged. We switch to Scotch at closing. Also, do not place cigar butts in the urinal...it makes them soggy and hard to light.

Jay,I,ve learned the best policy is to say no tools loaned.I,v done it in the past and it seems I ended up either having to hunt my stuff back or they broke it so I came to the point that to remain friends I,v had to say whats in my shop was bought and paid for because I needed it.You,d never go to a mechanic to ask to borrow his tools would you?In my shop I,m the boss(the only place bye the way). And if you should want a beer don,t you dare say a word about the brand:DDave

I have a sign posted in my shop that has all the local tool rental companies and their phone numbers listed in BIG, BOLD LETTERS...seems to work for me.

If you borrow a tool or an implement to work on a project, return it in the same as or BETTER condition than when you got it.

Word gets around. People are far more likely to say yes when they know that you treat their equipment and tools as you'd want yours treated.
