If you want to burn coal , buy a coal stove , coal boiler , or coal furnace . I used a wood and coal New Yorker boiler for 20 plus years and it burned wood just fine but not coal . Even though it had shaker grates the fire box was great for wood but lousy for coal . I sold it and put in a self feeding coal boiler and love it . I say self feeding , it is like a pellet stove with a hopper . Burning coal is a learning process and is nothing like burning wood so that is why combinations don't always work out so well . If you are serious about coal go the coal forums and you can learn all you need to know about them , that's how I learned .
